Levin Says State Department Hid Facts
on Remaining PLO Terrorists in Beirut
WASHINGTON — Sen.
Carl Levin (D-Mich.)
charged on Tuesday that
the State Department knew
last September that the
Palestine Liberation
Organization had left 600
fighters in west Beirut in
violation of the Habib
agreements, but did not dis-
close the information pub-
licly.
Levin said Undersecre-
tary of State Lawrence S.
Eagleburger disclosed the
information to several Sen-
ators, but the information
was never made public as
promised.
Israel moved into west
Beirut in September to re-
move the last PLO ele-
ments. It also allowed
Christian militiamen to
enter the Sabra and Shatila
refugee camps, after Leba-
non refused to do so, to clear
out the remaining PLO
elements. The militiamen

Levin stated in his Senate
speech:
"Disclosure of this
knowledge at the time
would have buttressed
the justification for, if not
the wisdom of, Israel's
move into Beirut. Mr.
Eagleburger promised
me and my colleagues
that the State Depart-
ment would release the
information to the media
at that time. But the de-
Canadian Party Ousts Teacher
Who Was Against Jews, Holocaust
TORONTO (JTA) — The
rightwing Social Credit
Party of Canada has ousted
James Keegstra, a high
school teacher and mayor of
the village of Eckville, Al-
berta, who taught his
classes that Jews are the
root of all evil in the world
and that the Holocaust
never occurred.
Martin Hattersley, na-
tional leader of the Social
Credit Party, said he re-
quested and received
Keegstra's resignation only
10 days after the teacher
was elected to the party's
executive at its recent con-
vention and three days after
a federal judge upheld
Keegstra'S dismissal from
the Alberta school system.
According to Hattersley,
a lawyer from Edmonton,
Alberta, the party delegates
"did not realize it was the
same Jim Keegstra" when
they elected him third vice
president. Keegstra's views
are "not compatible" with
present day party politics,
Hattersley said.
He acknowledged,
however, that the theory
of an international
Jewish conspiracy,
propounded by Keegstra,
was popular with some
Social Credit factions in
the 1930s when the
movement was trans-
planted to Canada from
Britain and "there quite
likely are other Social
Credit members today
who hold these views
privately."
But Hattersley insisted
that the national party is
"an open party (which) can-
not take stands critical of
any race or peoples." He
disavowed any party affilia-
tion with outside factions
that distribute Social Credit
and anti-Semitic literature.
THE NEW NAME IN TOWN
partment did not release
it, nor has it done so yet.
"I find rather disturbing
Mr. Eagleburger's explana-
tion that the information
hasn't been released be-
cause the media have not
asked for it, when the media
hasn't even known about it.
"Mr. President, I believe
the way the State Depart-
ment has conducted itself in
this matter is further evi-
dence of a tilt by the Ad-
ministration away from Is-
rael."

Convicted Nazi
Gets Jail Term
BONN (JTA) — Karl*
Tollkuehn, a Latvian-born
former petty officer in the
Nazi-controlled Latvian se-
curity police, was sentenced
to 3 1/2 years imprisonment
by a Hamburg district court
Monday for complicity in
the mass murders of Jews
during World War II.
Tollkuehn, 70, admitted
his guilt but insisted that
although a Nazi by convic-
tion, he was not anti-
Semitic. According to the
charges he aided and abet-
ted the shooting of 700
Jewish women and children
deported from Germany to
Latvia in 1942 and was
similarly involved in the
shooting of 30 other Jews
near Riga the same year.
A court spokesman said
the light sentence was im-
posed because Tollkuehn
made a statement of confes-
sion.
