Panel Boosts Aid to Israel

WASHINGTON (JTA) —
The Reagan Administra-
tion appears not to be con-
cerned about the increase in
its recommended military
and economic assistance to
Israel voted by Senate and
House committees. But
there were indications
Wednesday that the Ad-
ministration hopes that the
increases can be blocked be-
fore final Congressional ap-
proval is taken.
This reaction emerged
after the House Foreign Af-
fairs Committee voted 18-5
Tuesday to increase the
economic assistance to Is-
rael for the 1984 fiscal year
from the $750 million
recommended by the ad-
ministration to $850 mil-
lion, all of it a grant. The
committee also provided
that the $1.7 billion in mili-
tary assistance for Israel be
split evenly between loans
and grants, at $850 million
each'. The Administration
had recommended that only
$550 million of the military
assistance be a grant.
The Senate Foreign Af-
fairs Committee voted the
same split in military assis-

Herzog Sixth
Israel President

JERUSALEM (JTZ) —
Chaim Herzog was inaugu-
rated as Israel's sixth
president last week.
In his inaugural speech,
the new chief of state, who
was born in Ireland and is a
son of the late Chief Rabbi -
Isaac Halevi Herzog of Is-
rael, warned repeatedly
against intolerance.
Herzog recalled the disas-
ters of Jewish history
which were caused by
internal , strife and urged
the nation to foster a spirit
of unity, tolerance and
mutual understanding.
Outgoing President Yit-
zhak Navon sounded the
same theme in his farewell
address.

Druckman quits

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Rabbi Haim Druckman, the
ultra rightwing patron of
the Gush Emunim, formally
removed 'himself from the
National Religious Party
last week and set up his own
Knesset faction called
"Matzad" which expects to
draw its support from the
Orthodox settlers and
yeshivas on the West Bank.
His defection, which he
announced some time ago,
leaves the NRP with only
five Knesset members deep-
ly divided among them-
selves. •

Discrimination

TEL AVIV (ZINS) — A
Bar-Ilan University survey
shows that 50 percent of Is-
raeli youth consider a per-
son's background when
selecting a marriage part-
ner. The most rejected
partners of those persons of
North African or Middle
East background, including
rejection by those within
those same groups.
Researcher Rina Shachar
concludes that those groups
have a low self-image in Is-
rael.

proved $910 million in eco-

which $850 million would
be a grant.
