Take Note of Arella Barley in New Recording, 'Arena'
By HEIDI PRESS
When I was a teenager
working in my dad's record
store downtown, never did I
think that one day I'd actu-
ally review an album.
However, I'm glad I ac-
cepted the task, for I was

treated to a lively, joyful re-
cording of traditional
Jewish melodies.
Arella Barley, a Sabra
and cousin to Detroiter
Murray Liberman, has just
released a new album,
"Arella," on the Mitva Re-
cords label.
A former Detroiter —
she attended Oak Park
High School and Wayne
State University — Miss
Barley started singing
professionally at celebra-
lions in Israel, has been a
vocalist with performing
bands, was an
entertainer attached to
the Israeli army and con-
tinued performing and
teaching after returning
to the U.S. in 1976.
Miss Barley is a resident
of Oakland, Calif., where
she performs in Israeli-
related functions, in Shabat
programs and as a cantor.
She also has been a music
teacher, toured with Israeli
productions in South
America and performed in
Israeli theater.
She also has had ex-
hibitions of her works in
ceramics.
Although my experi-
ence with Israeli music is
nominal, I do have one
favorite, "Yerushalayim
Shel Zahav" (Jerusalem
of Gold) and was de-
lighted to find it as a
selection on the album.
What a surprise! It is such
a delicate rendition —
sweet, soft — the Barley
version is cheerful and a
treat to hear.
She gives an interesting
treatment to the traditional
Adon Olam prayer. Given
an up-tempo rhythm adding
bounce to the melody, the
Barley treatment adds a
mellowing effect,' making
the selection spirited and
pleasant.
Other selections on the
album include: "Lecha
Dodi," "Quando El Rey
Nimrod," "Etzleynu Bekfar
Todra," "Tzur Mishelo,"
"Yedid Nefesh,"

"Yerushalayim
Shel
Shalom" and "Hydah." The
lyrics, both in Hebrew or
Yiddish were applicable
and English, are included
on a special pull-out sheet.
The backside explains: "The
combination on the album
of Sephardic and
Ashkenazic songs, both tra-
ditional and modern, are to
show us two sides of our-
selves, even though we are
all one people. Arella's
music is a prayer for peace
and her voice makes that
prayer a sweet sound in our
ears."
Accompanying her on
the album and the in-
struments they play are:
Vince Delgado on darbek
and def; John Havard,
guitar and electric guitar;
Mimi Delgado, kanoun
and finger cymbals; and
Glen Cronkite, percus-
sion.
The album is available at
Borenstein's or by calling

Try to get a copy. Listen-
ing to "Arella" is a truly
enjoyable experience.
