FOR YEARS, it was
known as that neighbor-
hood bar around the corner
. . . The locals stopped by
for a beer or a shot after a
long working day . . . That
began when it opened right
around the time of prohibi-
tion days in 1931.
Today, many years later,
it has a different name, a
juke box in the corner play-
ing vintage sounds, a bar
rail that yesterday's
atrons would have loved to
put their foot on and family
dining.
Now it's known as the
"Pub 1881" or just "1881" to
the new generation of loc-
als, who come from miles
away to enjoy the food,
drinks and atmosphere.
It recently celebrated
the site's beginning of a
second 50 years . . . lo-
cated on Woodward just
north of 11 Mile in
Berkley . . . opened over
a year by George Kos-
mas.
It is the former Hun-
tington Inn shot and a beer
hangout . . . now trans-
formed into a spot for
families . . . with salads,
steaks, fish, souvlaki, Gre-
cian chicken, bar-b-q ribs
and chicken, etc.
A most unique menu item
is the Muffaletta Sandwich,
which was created from a
New Orleans recipe of the
early 1900s . . . It is some-
what related by name to the
Muffaletta Ground Round
. . . or Muff Burger . . . a
combination of Muffaletta
topping (Italian vegetables)
and provolone cheese . . .
The only other place that
makes it is the Detroit Insti-
tute of Arts.
"1881" is unique in many
other ways, including its
19th Century decor, which
seems to be a bit of
Bricktown transplanted
north to suburbia . . . The
giant horseshoe bar is a
throwback to days gone by
. . . where people gathered
around for a cool beer in a
frosty mug, topical discus-
sion and a place to unwind
before heading home.
NOW YOU CAN get a
pure beef hamburger sand-
wich at Healthy Jones res-
taurant . . . Northwestern
and 12 Mile . . . It's a big,
juicy delicious i /3 pounder
. . . and you're also assured
of the best beef possible . . .
The meat is from cattle not
shot with hormones . . . no
chemicals . . . and grazed
in farms of Upland, Mich.,
where many farmers, grow
only organic vegetables and
fruits . . . as well as raising
the pure organic beef . . .
It's called The Big Jones
($2.95) . . . Cheeseburger
is called The Big Cheese
($3.20) . . . Both are on
whole wheat buns . . .
served in a basket with
potato chips . . . and side of
relishes plus all the neces-
sary condiments put on the
Great American Food . .
hamburger . . . The one at
Healthy Jones easily ranks
among the best.
CARL STEGER ended
six years, last week, at the
piano bar of Jakks Lounge,
Greenfield at 10 Mile, with
a big cake for everyone from
owners Dick and Aggie
LaCombe.
CALIFORNIA SUITE
by Jimmy Launce Prod-
uctions opens tonight at
"The Club," Hyatt Regency,
Dearborn . . . and will play
each Friday and Saturday
evening . . . with curtain
time 8:30 p.m. . . . There
are package prices for
Kafay's or Guilo's restau-
rants plus the show only
. . . This is Jimmy's second
dinner-theater location . . .
His other is at Somerset
Mall.
A FRIENDLY oversized
furry rat is again enlighten-
ing the hearts of hundreds
of children and their
families . . . as Chuck E.
Cheese's Pizza Time Thea-
ter has opened on east Nine
Mile just east of Woodward.
Chuck E. Cheese's Pizza
Time Theater is a dynamic
family entertainment cen-
ter that offers mechanically
"live" performances by
three dimensional com-
puter controlled singing
animal characters and
token-operated games and
kiddie rides . . . Also a food
menu that includes pizza in
four sizes, sandwiches, a
63-item salad and dessert
bar and a sundae bar . . .
