ONE OF THE PRE-
MIER instrumental bands
now on the ja zz scene, Spyro
Gyra, and a Detroit favo-
rite, Brookside Jazz Band,
take their turns on the
P'Jazz outside terrace stage
at Hotel Pontchartrain this
Monday and Wednesday,
respectively.
Spyro Gyra, with five suc-
cessful albums, has come a
long way from its begin-
nings as a bar band in Buf-
falo, N.Y. . . . Although
their name is derived from
an algae that grows in stag-
nant water, there is nothing
stagnant about Spyro Gy-
ra's music . . . Described as
jazz fusion, their music is a
blending of contemporary
jazz with rock, soul and
latin elements.
The Brookside Jazz Band
has been a regular at P'Jazz
every year since the series
began . . . concentrating on
songs geared for big bands
. . .. playing favorites from
Stan Kenton, Buddy Rich,
Maynard Ferguson and Mel
Lewis as well as original
compositions_
Often called the 22nd
member of the band, Ursula
Walker will join Brookside
during its Wednesday ap-
pearance . . . She. is well-
known in Detroit for her
versatile vocals on songs
ranging from blues to pun-
chy, driving jazz.
