JERUSALEM (JNI) —
The Israel Broadcasting
Authority's annual Libit-
rom telethon in early
August had a record 142
million shekels ($5 million)
in pledges for the Israel De-
fense Fund for Israeli
soldiers.
More than 44,000 indi-
vidual contributions were
pledged by phone, in addi-
tion to large institutional
donations. A public auction
of art and Judaica - raised-
$545,000 and residents of
southern Lebanon, after a
two-week collection,
pledged $18,500 to the mili-
tary fund.
A
woman from
Nahariya, who has 17
children (eight of them in
the IDF) and . 40
grandchildren, an-
nounced her $400 dona-
tion on Israel Television.
All funds collected will be
used to promote basic edu-
cation for soldiers, the de-
velopment of fighting
rmethods and protective
gear for soldiers in the field
and expanded training pro-
grams.

Soldiers' Fund
Gains $5 Million

A federal judge ruled
Monday that the shared-
time program employed by
the Grand Rapids school
district violates the con-
stitutional principle of sep-
aration of church and state.
U.S. District Judge
Richard A. Enslen ordered
the city to stop paying its
teachers to teach music, art,
remedial reading and re-
medial math at 41 private,
church-related - schools
throughout the city. These
subjects are not offered by
the private schools.
. The U.S. Supreme. Court
has said that programs such
as the one in Grand Rapids
are unconstitutional if they
do not serve a thoroughly
secular purpose, if their ef-
fect in any- way advances or
. inhibits religion, or if exces-
sive _ government
entanglements result. -
The Grand Rapids school
board is seeking a stay for
the judge's order, pending
an appeal to the Sixth Cir-
cuit Court of Appeals in
Cincinnati.

Percy Receives
Begin Apology

WASHINGTON (JTA) —
A spokesman for Sen.
Charles Percy (R-lll.) said
the Senator has received a
letter from Premier
Menahem Begin of Israel
apologizing for rebuking-- --
him for allegedly urging
President Reagan to bring
Israel to its knees because of
the situation in Lebanon.
Begin's letter, according
to the spokesman, said that
the premier accepts Percy's
avowal that he never made
such a statement.
