The Best of Everything

(Continued from Page 31)
dancing at the Sans Souci in
Miami Beach, Fla., 1951
and 1952.
The former King of the
Cha Cha now has Benji's
North restaurant on Or-
chard Lake Rd. between
Cass Lake Rd. and
Middlebelt (one mile north
of Telegraph) in Sylvan
Lake.
It was once a Nugget
which Benji has turned
around with his expertise as
a chef.
How did he go from
dancing to cooking? . . .
Most folks don't know
that Benji used to dabble
in kitchens of restau-
rateur friends ... He
then went on to work in
several restaurants as a
short order cook . .
attended Culinary Insti-
tute of America hi New
Haven, Conn. and also
when it moved to Hyde
Park, N.Y.
In 1967, he took a position
with the Detroit Public
Schools . . . teaching cook-
ing four years at Wilbur
Wright High . .and
started a vocational food
program at SEOVAC
(Southeast Oakland Voca-
tional Education Center) on
14 Mile in Royal Oak . . .
there 10 years with a res-
taurant also open to the
public.

taurant . .and Benji's,
ober 1981,
opened in Oct
seating 101, is his dream
come true .It is a
family-oriented spot
where a man, wife and chil-
dren can eat heartily and
good within its low price
range.
But Benji is a high qual-
ity chef, too .. with excel-
lent recipes that make folks
drool .. . as evidenced by
his work on gourmet cater-
ing for outside parties . . .
or groups ordering in ad-
vance for dining at his res-
taurant.
A big favorite is his
own "Que Pasa" (sounds
like a cha-cha), Beef
Nachos (corn Tortilla
chips covered with beef,
diced vegetables and his
own blend of three
cheeses).
Bar-b-q ribs are $5.95 for
a half slab and $9.95 full
slab . . . Highest dinner
price is eight oz. charbroiled
N.Y. Strip Sirloin, $6.95
. . Chicken Breast Filet
d. inners are $4.95 .. plus
s, 16
over 25 sandwiche
dinner entrees, five salads,
children's menu, breakfast
served all times, homemade
soups, chili, desserts galore.
Benji even grinds his own
special blend of coffee beans
.. And you can also buy a
fs hat for $2.
che
"TINTYPES" at the
Birmingham Theater is not
your ordinary kind of musi-
cal . . . This one has no plot
but is woven together with
masterful cohesiveness.
About 48 songs are sung
and danced to by the
talented cast of three
women and two men, in-
cluding Patrice MAmsel . .
"Tintypes" brings singing,
dancing, pantomime and
comedy .. with a display
m yesteryears
of songs fro
fast-paced in solo, duo and
choral rendition.
"Tintypes" at the Bir-
mingham Theater, directed
by Jerry Zaks, is different
. . . gets better as it goes
along . . . and before the
entertaining finale, winds
up with a fun-filled series of
sequences from the merry
days of vaudeville.
SOME-
. THERE'S
THING new again • at
Kingsley Inn on Woodward
in Bloomfield Hills . .
Now Dover Sole is flown in
from England.
In the lounge, Ronnie
Phillips at the piano bar
plays for sing-along Tues-
day through Saturday . .
while Charlie Dubin is still
the dining room piano
stylist . . . at Kingsley Inn
since Darbys burned down
in the late 60s.
Kingsley has received
many accolades for its din-
ing . . . but one common
thing on most any menu
. .a plain ordinary club
sandwich, is a standout
among theater-goers.
PAUL LOCHRICHIO
returns again to Dewey's in
the Michigan Inn for a
month-long engagement,
Tuesday through July 3
. He'll be in the lounge
Mondays through Satur-
days.
