Kahane Calls Yamit 'A Tragedy' ati

By ALAN HITSKY

Rabbi Meir Kahane,
founder of the Jewish De-
fense League in the U.S.
and the Kach movement in
Israel, was in Detroit last
Monday as part of a nation-
wide tour of speaking
engagements.
Rabbi Kahane was visit-
ing Detroit three weeks ago
when he was called back to
Israel to negotiate with his
supporters in Yamit who
had threatened to commit
suicide rather than permit
the return of the Sinai to
Egypt by Israel.
The rabbi told The Jewish
News that "no one was
happy with Yamit, but few
recognize- the tragedy: The
question of precedent has
now been set. (Menahem)
Begin can speak all he
wants to of no more settle-
ments being removed. But if
they can take down a town
of 4,000 they can take down
smaller settlements."
He said the "retreat" in
the Sinai led to the persis-
tent violence in Judea,
Samaria and Gaza. He
said the Arabs inter-
preted the return of Sinai
as Jewish weakness.
"Israel rose through God's
hand. Those that see weak-
ness in the Jew read into
this that there is no Jewish
God." He added that Israel
is sanctification of God's
name.
"This is not just philos-
ophy," he said. "It will be
translated into Jewish los-
ses."
He said the shooting of
two Arabs on the Temple
Mount was a case in point.
"The Temple Mount is the
holiest point in Judaism,
but the Arabs put up a mos-
que and the Jews did not
care. The Arabs rioted after
the recent shooting, but
would the Jews have rioted
under the same circum-
stances?"
He inferred that the Jews
don't care as strongly as the
Arabs.
Rabbi Kahane contin-
ued past criticism of
American Jewish leader-
ship, saying their weak-
ness is an invitation to
pressure. "If you can't
say no to Reagan on Sinai
you can't say no to Re-
agan on Jerusalem."
He claimed that now the
Sinai has been returned
"Jewish liberals and
peaceniks" will try to make
Israel and Jewry feel guilty.

NEW YORK — Yeshiva
University will confer hon-
orary degrees upon three
prominent Sephardic com-
munity figures, philan-
thropist Joseph Ades, Nobel
Laureate Dr. Baruj Be-
nacerraf and Col. J.R.
Elyachar, a founder of the
university's college of
medicine, at a Sephardic
convocation dinner Tuesday
in New York.
The event will commemo-
rate the 18th anniversary of
the founding of the univer-
sity's Sephardic Studies
Programs.

"There will be a major drive
by people like Leonard Fein
(editor of Moment maga-
zine) and others asking for
major concessions by Israel
and a return to "moral-
ethical' concepts of
Judaism."
Rabbi Kahane said these
people and their concepts
are not Jewish. He again
called for throwing all

Arabs out of Israel, saying
that such a policy would end
rioting and bloodshed
within the country.
Asked if such a policy
would not lead to continued
Arab terrorism against Is-
rael, Rabbi Kahane replied,
"I don't expect the Arabs to , •
love us. I want the hissing
snake outside my house, not
inside."
