Weapons Sale -
to Saudis Halted

BONN (JTA) — Chancel-
lor Helmut Schmidt has
dropped plans to sell Saudi
Arabia West Germany's
most advanced tank, the
Leopard II, but has not
excluded the sale of other
sophisticated arms to the
Saudis, according to a re-
port in the daily Die Welt.

The newspaper said
Schmidt changed his mind
on the tank sale because of
serious political problems
within his ruling Social
Democratic Party (SPD).
The government recently
adopted new guidelines for
the sale of arms abroad.
They removed the long self-
imposed ban against
weapons sales to countries
in areas of tension, such as
the Middle East.

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
The Aguda Israel
threatened to quit Premier
Menahem Begin's coalition
government Wednesday un-
less his promise to ban El Al
flights on the Sabbath is ful-
filled.
The threat was made by
the Aguda's Knesset faction
after the Supreme Court
ruled Monday that the gov7
eminent could not impose
the Sabbath ban without
approval by the Knesset's
finance committee.
The finance committee
must consider the ban in
light of the law which re-
quires government-owned
corporations to operate ac-
cording to sound economic
principles. Aguda MK
Shlomo Lorincz, who chairs
the committee, said he did
not permit it to discuss the
issue because it was clear
beforehand that the ban
would not be "economical."

The Aguda insists that
the ban must be im-
plemented on religious
and moral grounds.

Avraham Shapiro,
chairman of the coalition
Knesset faction, said the
Aguda would. remain in the
government only if all coali-
tion partners endorsed the
Sabbath ban and made it
clear they were not suc-
cumbing to religious pres-
sures. Although Begin
strongly supports the ban,
at least some members of
the Likud's Liberal Party
wing are known to oppose it.
It is also bitterly opposed
by g1 Al employees. Several
thousand workers demon-
strated at Ben-Gurion Air-

port Wednesday against the
government's decision to
impose the ban.
The workers, represent-
ing El Al, the airport
authority and the Civil Av-
iation Administration
threatened to shut down
Ben-Gurion Airport to all
carriers on the Sabbath if El
Al is grounded. Such action
would affect foreign airlines
serving Israel.

ILO Accuses
Israeli Policies

GENEVA — The Inter-
national Labor Organiza-
tion last week criticized Is-
rael for deteriorating work-
ing conditions in the ad-
ministered territories,
claiming Israel is violating
its own child labor laws in
the territories.
The ILO, in a report pre-
pared for its annual confer-
ence which will meet in
June, said Israel uses Arab
children for farm and fac-
tory labor, provides little
training for Arabs
tightly controls Arab labor
unions.
The report claims Israeli
policies on land and water
are threatening Arab ag-
riculture and identity.
