MONTREAL — The
Samuel' Jacobson Founda-
tion for Jewish Culture is
sponsoring the third annual
International Koomkoom
Songwriting Contest.
The contest is open to
songwriters of original, un-
published material in any
one of five languages:
English, French, Hebrew,
Yiddish or Ladino. Judges
will award $1,000 for the
best song and cash prizes for
the three runners-up.
Entries must be received
by Aug. 31. For information

Lucien Harris, director of
the World Zionist Organiza-
tion External Relations de-
partment North American
desk in Jerusalem, will be
in Detroit next week to
speak to Jewish and civic
groups.
At 8:30 p.m. Thursday,
Harris will address the
Greater Detroit Chug Aliya
at a meeting in the home of
Cantor and. Mrs. Earl Be-
rris, 29636 Middlebelt, Apt.
2602, Farmington Hills. -
At noon Wednesday, he
will speak at Mercy College
of Detroit on "50 Years of
Rotary in Israel." He will
speak on "The Holocaust
and Israel" at 10 a.m.

Stationed in London as
information officer for
the Jewish Agency when
Israel's independence
was declared in 1948,
Harris raised the Israeli
flag over the agency's
offices during a special
celebration held that day.
He was then invited by
the provisional government
of Israel to join the state's
newly formed civil service
and held various senior
level posts in Tel Aviv and
Jerusalem from 1948 to
1952. These included serv-
ice as parliamentary secre-
tary for the late Golda Meir
(then Ministry of Labor)
and parliamentary assis-
tant to the late Jack Geri,
minister of trade and indus-
try.
From 1952 through 1977,
he served with the Hadas-
sah Medical Organization,
first as personnel director
and then as director of in-
formation services.
He is a frequent an-
nouncer heard on "The
Voice of Israel," broadcast
from Jerusalem.
The public is invited to
the Chug Aliya meeting,
and reservations are re-
quired. For reservations,
