U.S. Diplomatic
Move in Syria
BONN (JTA) — Diploma-
tic circles here expect the
tic
United States to launch a
major diplomatic offensive
aimed at Syria after Israel
completes its evacuation of
Sinai.
Information to that effect
reportedly comes from
sources in the European
Economic Community
(EEC) which maintains
close contacts with Wash-
ington.
West Germany officially
views the scheduled with-
drawal of Israel from Sinai
Sunday as a decisive day in
Middle East diplomacy and
expects new diplomatic in-
itiatives to follow. Bonn has
kept silent on this point so
as not to rankle Israel. But
the visit to Jerusalem by
Foreign Minister Hans-
Dietrich Genscher, planned
for May, has been post-
poned.
