WASHINGTON (JTA) —
A scholar asserted at a sym-
posium of academics here
that the Jewish community
has yet to learn how "to use"
the services of Jewish aca-
demicians and that "there
seems to be no room in the
contemporary Jewish com-
munity for that kind of con-
tribution that comes from
the heart" rather than the
purse.
Participants in the sym-
posium were 20 alumni of
summer study programs in
Israel sponsored jointly by
Bnai Brith Hillel Founda-
tions and the United Jewish
Appeal. Bnai Brith esti-
mated that the number of
American Jewish college
professors now tops 50,000.
The 20 academics agreed
that their colleagues must
become more committed to
and involved with the or-
ganized Jewish community.
They also agreed that in the
great majority of American
cities, communal participa-
tion by campus aca-
demicians has not had a
major impact.

Fund Raiser
for Synagogue
in Alaska

SEATTLE (JTA) —
Members of the only
synagogue in Alaska have
commissioned a non-Jewish
artist to go to Israel and
prepare 20 watercolors on
his return to be used in a
campaign for funds to ex-
pand the heavily-used Re-
form synagogue, according
to a report in the Jewish
Transcript of Seattle.
According to the report,
Byron Birdsall is a well-
known Alaskan artist, who
came to Alaska five years
ago to work with an adver-
tising agency. The son of a
Methodist missionary, the
artist is an extensive world
traveler but the trip to Is-
rael is his first.
Rabbi Lester Polonsky
said the idea was developed
by two women members of
Cong. Beth Sholom in
Juneau. The artist's draw-
ings of the landscape and
life in Israel will be sold by
the congregation. Proceeds
will go to the synagogue
building fund.

rands; and when we are sent
upon thorn we should es-
teem it a proof of God's con-
fidence — as a compliment
from him.
