Bnai Moshe to Celebrate 70th

Sylvia Ross has been
named chairman of Cong.
Bnai Moshe's 70th anniver-
sary celebration. The
synagogue was formed as
Cong. Beth Eliyahu on Sept.•
1, 1911. A number of events
have been planned for May
to celebrate the synagogue's
anniversary.
Committee chairman for
the celebration include

During the first four
years of Cong. Beth
Eliyahu's existence, from
which Bnai Moshe evolved,
the congregation worship-

Hastings and Winder
streets, in the Hannah
Schloss Building and in a
hall at Hastings and Brewer
streets.

In 1915, a residence on
Eliot street was pur-
chased and remodeled;
these quarters were
occupied until 1918,
when the Garfield
synagogue was complete.
At its cornerstone laying,
the sons and daughters of
Morris Gunsberg pur-
chased the privilege of
naming the congregation
from Elias Einczig who
contributed the proceeds
to the building fundof the
newly named Cong. Bnai
Moshe.

the first synagogue building
was sold in 1927 after only
nine years in use After
renting quarters at Lin-
wood and Clairmount, and

for the High Holy Days, the
new synagogue on Dexter
Boulevard at Lawrence
Avenue served the needs of
its members for 30 years,
from 1929-59.
The main sanctuary sea-
ted 1,000; the social hall ac-
commodated 800. The
chapel, library and meeting
halls, doubling for
classrooms, barely met the
requirements until 1952,
when a new school building
was added with 12 large
classrooms, lounge, school
and general offices. These
new facilities also accom-

Former Nazi
Goes on Trial
in W. Germany

BONN (JTA) — Wilhelm
Westerheide, a former SS
official accused of complic-
ity in the murders of 9,000
Jews in the Wladiniir-
Wolynsk ghetto in the Uk-
raine during World War II,
went on trial in Dortmund,
W. Germany last week.
Weste'rheide, 73, was ac-
quitted by a Bielefeld court
in October 1979 after the
prosecution failed to pro-
duce sufficient evidence for
conviction. A higher court
reversed that decision in
July 1980 and ordered a
new trial.
Westerheide was the SS
officer in charge of the civi-
lian population during the
Nazi occupation of the Uk-
raine. According to the
prosecution, he played a
major role in deporting
Jews to death camps. _
