George F. Will has be-
come a symbol of the more
sympathetic to Israel in the
media and his admirers
grew into an army of ap-
preciative readers of the
Washington Post columnist
whose articles appear fre,
quently in the Detroit
News.
Monday evening, a group
of his admirers had an
opportunity to express
appreciation for his positive
approaches to Israel's needs
when they met him at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Paul
Borman in Birmingham.
It was an intimate
gathering. Despite the
storm that broke loose early
that evening, some 65 of the
90 invited guests made it
through the deepening
snow. It was a function ar-
ranged by the Chabad
Lubavitch movement here
on the occasion of the 80th
birthday of the Rebbe, the
head of the movement,
Rabbi Menahem Mendel
Schneerson.
Paul Borman, for him-
self and his wife Marlene,
extended greetings to the
guest and spoke of the
accumulating apprecia-
tive sentiments towards
the columnist.

David Hermelin, the only
other speaker, gave an out-
line of Chabad programs,
the work done for the youth,
the schools conducted by the
movement, its summer
camping and other pro-
grams for the advancement
of traditional Jewish aims.
In his address to the
gathered, Will gave an out-
line of existing conditions in
the Middle East, with em-
phasis on Israel's plight and
the urgency of providing the
support needed to assure
the state's security.
Acknowledging the as-
surances from the present
administration in Washing-
ton, he was not uncritical of
shortcomings.
He also had some criti-
cal comments on the pre-
sent Israel government
and stated that at one
point he hoped for suc-
