to the United States to
explore Sachar's pro-
posal.
In the ensuing dis-
cussions Sachar suggested
that it would be fitting for
Springer to establish at the
university a chair in con-
temporary history. Agree-
ment brought $250,000 (in
1968, the cost of an endowed
chair) and the Ottilie
Springer Chair in contem-
porary European history
(named for Springer's
mother).
For the official installa-
tion of the chair, Springer
came to Brandeis and a
warm, personal relation-
ship between him and Sac-
har was established.
Springer was Sachar's host
on visits to Germany. When
Sachar retired as president
of Brandeis, he was pre-
sented with a decoration
from the West German gov-
ernment for the Brandeis
initiative in the reconcila-
tion with the post-Hitler
German people.
All this set the stage for
the recent Sachar-Springer
meeting which took place in
Boston about a month ago.
As Sachar recalls, Springer
almost immediately
broached the subject of the
chair, conjectured that in-
flation had surely di-
minished the impact of the
endowment, and promised
to add the equivalent of
$100,000 to it.
Brandeis
President
Marver H. Bernstein stated
that this new support would
be of "significant help in
enhancing the university's ,
excellence in the teaching of
modern European history."

AXEL SPRINGER
Ben-Gurion to help start an
art museum in Israel.
Springer, who was one of
Chancellor Konrad
Adefiauer's top advisers,
had built a major publish-
ing empire. An anti-Nazi
who was saved from arrest
by a misdiagnosis of a ter-
minal illness, he felt deep
sorrow and shame over the
Holocaust which spurred
his offer; an act of contrition
to perhaps form the basis for
reconciliation between the
German people and the
Jewish state.
Sachar was impressed.
He wrote a letter to
Springer explaining that
Brandeis was the only
Jewish-sponsored, nonsec-
tarian university in the
United States. As such,
Sachar said it was strong
symbol for the American
Jewish community and ex-
pressed the hope that
through the university
Springer would want to ex-
tend his efforts at reconcili-
ation to the Jews of
America.
Sachar recalls being
resigned to "the usual
perfunctory handling of
a letter from a stranger."
However, with in a week,
there was a trans-
Atlantic call from Ernst
Cramer, special assistant
to Springer. Cramer, a
Jew, who had served in
Germany on the Ameri-
can General Staff and
after the war in the mili-
tary government before
going to work for
Springer, said that he
