The Sigal volume is chal-
lenging in every respect due
to the extent of the author's
resort to the textual to dis-
prove false claims.
Every Bible quotation
used by the missionaries
is tested to disprove their
claims. Both the Holy
Scriptures and the Chris-
tian Testament are
scoured for the validity of
claims which are dis-
proved by the author
who spent 25 years in his
study of the claims made
by the missionaries.
Sigal attacks the mis-
sionary claims at the outset
by declaring:
"The entire missionary
view of the Jewish relation-
ship to God is fundamen-
tally wrong. This view is
based upon a prejudiced
Christian theological ap-
praisal of Judaism, not on
the nature of the co-
venantal relationship that
exists between God and Is-
rael.

"Misreading the essential
meaning of the Torah,
Christian theology de-
veloped along lines that are
at variance with the mes-
sage of the Hebrew Scrip-
tures. As a result, mission-
ary Christianity starts with
the thesis that the Jewish
Bible is the revealed word of
God, but that Judaism went
astray 2,000 years ago. The
missionaries claim that
Christianity then became
the true continuation of the
Jewish spiritual past.
"To support that con-
tention, they cannot at-
tack the Hebrew Bible.
Instead, in order to arrive
at the theological con-
cepts they desire, mis-
sionaries propose their
own radically altered
constructions of the
meaning of biblical ver-
ses. These altered con-
structions bear no rela-
tion to any of the beliefs
taught by priest and pro-
phet, the authentic
teachers in ancient Is-
rael."
It is in his attacks on the
claims, phrase by phrase,
quotation by quotation,
from Scripture as well as
the Christian text, that
Sigal is effective.
He shows that "scriptural
evidence does not substan-
tiate the missionary claim
that Christianity is the ful-
filment of biblical
prophecy."
Sigal is especially con-
cerned that Jews should not
be misled, that they should
know and understand the
texts in their true presenta-
tion and that they should be
guided against distortions.
Sigal, in his analyses, is
critical of the Paullist
claims. He declares:
"The modern missionary
movement still follows the
traditional Pauline method
of deceit and pretense.
Its antirational faith-
experience apology is an ex-
cuse in the face of the reality
that the Jewish Scriptures
do not show Jesus to be the
Messiah.
"The Jewish convert to
Christianity has been de-
ceived by subtle mental
manipulation into accept-
ing Jesus as God, into think-
ing evil is righteousness,
and into accepting the pre-
posterous view that the ob-
servance of God's Law is
against the will of God.
Often that Jew is led to be-
lieve that he has experi-
enced Jesus personally in
his life.
"The Jewish convert
should re-evaluate the
source of his experience.
The experience on which a
Jewish convert may base
his faith is not the result of
divine intervention in his
life. A man's emotional ex-
periences cannot take the
place of the true biblical
word, as found in the He-
brew Bible. The belief that
Jesus can affect one's life is
irrational and biblically un-
tenable. Convincing oneself
that something is true does
not make it so.
