Diabetes Test
at Providence

Providence Hospital will
offer free diabetes screening
tests 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Wednes-
day at the hospital.
Those having the test
should bring the name and
address of their family
physician.
They should also plan to
eat a meal high in carbo-
hydrates — starches and
sugars — two hours before
the test. The meal should be
consumed in a 15-minute
time period. Cereal,
potatoes, dried beans, corn,
bread and sugary foods are
all rich in carbohydrates.
After that meal, nothing
should be eaten or drunk
except water.
The test consists of taking
a small blood sample which
is processed in a laboratory.
People whose test results
are outside the range con-
sidered normal will be
notified by the Michigan Af-
filiate, American Diabetes
Association. Their physi-
cian also will be notified.
People whose tests are nor-
mal will not be contacted.
These screening tests are
designed to detect signs of
diabetes and are not a
check-up for people who
know they have the disease.
