The talit is put on before
the tefilin for the daily
morning prayers.
There are generally two
reasons advanced for this
order of observance. First,
there is the general rule
that an act which occurs on
a daily basis takes prefer-
ence to an act which does
not occur everyday.
The talit is put on every-
day while the tefilin are
only worn on weekdays and
not worn on Sabbaths and
holidays. Thus the talit is
put on first before the tefilin
are donned.

Secondly, the talit, ac-
cording to Jewish tradi-
tion, represents all of the
commandments of the
Jewish faith and is there-
fore more encompassing
than the tefilin.
- The latter aspect has been
explained by some commen-
taries as referring to the in-
cident of Adam and Eve in
the Garden of Eden. The
talit is a garment. It was
Adam and Eve's state of
nudity that reminds us of
the sin they committed in
Paradise. Their sin had
been the ignoring of the
commandment given them
by the Almighty.
Therefore, a garment,
such as the talit reminds us
of all the commandments of
the Almighty. Thus it is
given priority.
A brave captain is as a
root, out of which, as
branches, the courage of his
soldiers doth spring.

When I look back on all
the centuries of Jewish his-
tory, I think that this was
the best one in which to be
alive because it witnessed
the greatest degree of
creativity.
We have more a sense of
being in command of our
history than in any recent
generation of recorded his-
tory, a sense of being able,
oneself, to build and create
and to have some autonomy
over one's nation's future.
