Editor, The Jewish News:
I noticed a curious news
item in today's Haaretz. It
amused me and shocked me
even more. The headline
reads "American Jews seek
to establish an elegant
cemetery in Israel — the
Ministry of Religions ob-
jects." The article describes
a group of American Jews in
Cleveland and Miami who
want to set up a burial
ground here, with the assis-
tance of an Israeli lawyer,
Itzchak Segal.
This cemetery will have
all the amenities to which
American Jews are accus-
tomed. Segal is willing to
take his case up to the Is-
raeli Supreme Court. In the
event the group has no re-
course, they intend to lease
land in Judea and Samaria
and bring some of its mem-
bers to supervise the opera-
tion.
I always understood that
the majority of American
Jews preferred to donate
their money to institutions
and individuals in Israel,
schools, day care centers,
and the like. There is noth-
ing wrong in the effort as
such; the average Israeli
would never be able to fund
these institutions to the ex-
tent they require.
Nonetheless, there is a
sense of bitterness, even
anger, among Israelis
towards American
Jewry, who prefer to be
generous with their
material wealth, rather
than with themselves.
They don't want to live in
Israel.
It seems that some
American Jews, Orthodox
Jews at that, who pray for
the Return to Zion with
greater regularity than
most Reform or Conserva-
tive Jews, at least in the
formal sense, are comforta-
ble enough in Galut that liv-
ing in Israel is not a practi-
cal goal. It is the place for
one's "final rest." Israel re-
quires people who will in-
vest their efforts to build the
land.
If the final goal of one
group of Orthodox Jews is
their "final rest," I begin to
wonder about the balance of
American Jewry about Is-
rael. It would appear from
the headlines they don't
take Israel seriously at all.

Upper Nazareth, Israel
Herut Party, is forming a
young adults unit to be
called Herut/Betar of De-
troit.
This new unit is a depar-
ture from the traditional
"youth movement" in that it
will include a broader age
range, with a wide variety
of activities for members
age 16-30.
The group will adhere to
the principles of Ze'ev
Jabotinsky aiming to raise
Jewish and Zionist con-
sciousness among its mem-
bers and young Jews in the
community as well as work-
ing to strengthen Israel's
image in this country.
The new group will
send a delegation of
members and prospec-
tive members to a Mid-
west Zionist-Student
Conference to be held in
Cleveland July 31-Aug. 2.
