Lay Rabbi Charles Goldstein Retires From Monroe Post
the Bnai Israel Temple May
16 on the occasion of his re-
tirement from the temple.
In 1956, at age 60, Golds-
tein began serving the tem-
ple as a lay rabbi, officiating
at Bnai and Bnot Mitzva.
What originally was an
invitation to be lay rabbi to
a Monroe congregation for
four months turned into 25
years of service for Charles
Goldstein, a Southfield at-

dings.
According to the Monroe
Evening News, Goldstein
came to Monroe every two
weeks for about 20 years to
conduct services. He also
came on Jewish holidays.
Recently he spread his vis-
its out so that services were
held every three weeks
until earlier this month
when he announced his re-
tirement.
Previously, Goldstein
conducted services at
Temple Israel when it
was located in Detroit. He
earned bachelor's and
law degrees from the
University of Michigan
and began practicing law
in 1919.

The Jewish Community
Council of Metropolitan De-
troit is warning that the

Since the date of school elec-
tions is set by state law, the
Council is encouraging vot-
ers in the Jewish commu-
nity to seek absentee ballots
_ in order to participate.
Ballots must be returned
by 2 p.m. June 6. Applica-
