Israel Outlaws Arab Unit
for Terrorist Activities

TEL AVIV (JTA) — The
Arab National Coordinat-
ing Committee, an um-
brella organization of
nationalist Israeli Arabs,
was declared illegal last
week by Premier Menahem
Begin in his capacity as
minister of defense.
The committee was estab-
lished at a meeting of Israeli
Arabs in December and its
charter was ratified in Feb-
ruary. That charter de-
clares that the Israeli Arabs
are part of the Palestinian
people, whose sole represen-
tative is the Palestine Lib-
eration Organization.
Begin's Arab affairs ad-
viser, Binyamin Gur-Arye,
said that althotigh the
committee called itself a
political group it used ter-
rorist methods to help the
PLO aim of destroying Is-
rael and replacing it with a
Palestinian state.
Gur-Arye noted that
one of the groups within
the committee had sent
its members to Spain to
make contact with ex-
tremist PLO groups, from

Pork Ban Killed

JERUSALEM — The
ultra-Orthodox Agudat Is-
rael party withdrew a bill in
the Knesset this week that
would have banned pork
and pork products from Is-
rael.
The bill passed two
readings in the Knesset be-
fore liberals argued that
banning pork would offend
non-Jews as much as a ban
on kosher meat would of-
fend Jews.

where they had gone to
Iraq to train. After their
return to Israel they had
carried out two terrorist
acts and were now serv-
ing prison sentences.
Another committee
member, Salah Baransi,
had been a member of the
extremist El-Ard move-
ment declared illegal by Is-
rael's Supreme Court in
1964. He had carried out
terrorist activities in 1969
and had been sent to prison
for 10 years but since his re-
lease in 1979 had continued
terrorist activities.

NOW APPEARING at the

Jordanian Hits
Israel Waterway

UNITED NATIONS
(JTA) — Hazan Nuseibeh,
the Jordanian Ambassador
to the United Nations, has
warned that Israel's deci-
sion to proceed with the con-
struction of a 67 mile-long
canal to link the Mediterra-
nean with the Dead Sea will
have "far-reaching politi-
cal, economic, sociological,
agricultural and military"
consequences for the Gaza
Strip, the West Bank, Jor-
dan, the rights of the Pales-
tinians and the entire Mid-
dle East region.
In a letter to UN Secre-
tary General Kurt Wal-
dheim the Jordanian envoy
charged that the proposed
canal is an "aggression" by
Israel.
He said that, among other
things, the project will "in-
undate ancient Christian
monasteries and holy places
along the banks of the river
Jordan in addition to inun-
dating at whim the entire
region of the Jordan valley
by raising the water level of
the Dead Sea to a height
which would breach its
banks and inundate the ir-
rigated area in the Jordan
valley and the tourist re-
sorts as well as the vast
industrial chemical projects
which are nearing comple-
tion along the southern tip
of the Dead Sea."
