QUESTIONS AND
ANSWERS ON HEALTH
. . . by Joan Wittenberg of
Healthy Jones.
What can I drink in-
stead of coffee?
There are quite a few
cereal beverages that taste
like coffee and are really de-
licious. Pero, Wilsons,
Cafix, to name a few and
most health food stores
carry them. Herbal teas are
great tasting and a super
way to start the day . . .
There arg a large variety of
flavors to choose from so you
can see, you shouldn't feel at
all deprived when you give
up that cup of coffee.
Can I take vitamins in-
stead of eating?
A vitamin is a supple-

ment and that's just what it
does. It supplements your
diet and is not to be used
instead of eating. It's very
important to eat a well-
balanced, nutritious meal
along with taking vitamins.
I think breakfast is a very
neglected meal and one
that's so necessary. It starts
the whole day off right. Eat
a good lunch and dinner,
take your vitamins, exer-
cise and you've got it!
What is meant by hid-
den salt?
When we sprinkle salt
from the shaker we know
what we're getting, but
there are many foods you
wouldn't think are salty
that are brimming with it.
Sodium is used in large
amounts in canned and
processed foods, and the
label says "sodium," not
salt.
Raw celery contains more
sodium than any other veg-
etable we eat. Carbonated
soft drinks, especially diet
sodas, have more sodium
than plain ones. Ketchup,
olives, pickles, anchovies,
corned beef, frankfurters,
sauerkraut, pastrami, proc-
essed cheeses are all high in
sodium. The famous "Big
Mac" is the highest in
sodium in fast foods.
As we age, do we need
to change our eating
habits?
Adeline Garner Shell,
co-author of the "Feel Bet-
ter After Fifty" book (Simon
and Schuster), says regular
eating and not skipping a
meal is even more impor-
tant as we grow older. The
metabolism changes and
older people need 150 to 200
fewer calories a day than
they did when they were 35
to 50.
I think breakfast is a very
important meal for all ages.
I also believe vitamins play
a big part in our lives, espe-
cially as we age.
I've read it isn't impor-
tant to exercise. Do you
agree?
No. I think exercise is so
important — it increases
muscle strength and makes
the heart work more effi-
ciently. It also improves the
flow of blood to the brain. If I
go one day without doing
some form of exercise or
other, I feel really logy.
I just started working out
on a small trampoline and
its a lot of fun. You can
watch TV or listen to music
while you're doing it and the
time goes by very quickly.
How can I put more pep
into my life?
If you're eating junk
foods, coffee, sugar and cola
drinks, you're doing all the
wrong things. You should
start eating healthy, bal-
anced meals that can take
care of your nutritional
needs, and you should be
paying attention to your
vitamin intake. Exercise is
another big factor in living
a high-energy type of life.
I would like to know
more about buying
natural foods. Can you
suggest a book that's in-
formative?
Yes. It's in the form of a

paperback book called "The
Complete Shopper's Guide
to Natural Foods" by Chris-
topher Kilham (Random
House).

Rev. Smith
Attends Seder

NEW YORK — Rev.
Bailey Smith, president of
the Southern Baptist Con-
vention who gained notori-
ety last year by asserting
that "God does not hear the
prayers ofJews," attended a
Passover Seder this week.
Smith was the guest of
Mark •Briskman, director of
the North Texas - Ok-
lahoma Region of the
Anti-Defamation League of
Bnai Brith.
Smith and Briskman an-
nounced plans for ecumeni-
cal activities to bring about
better understanding be-
tween Baptists and Jews.
Briskman quoted Rev.
Smith as saying, "I would
die for your right to live as a
Jew in America."

Silence is the virtue of the
wise.
