TORONTO — An
anonymous donor will pay
the medical expenses of a
Latvian Jew barred from
entering Canada because
his family could not raise
the $20,000 to $30,000
needed for a kidney trans-
plant, according to a Health
Ministry official.
The offer came while the
Canadian government
negotiated with the Hebrew
Immigrant Aid Society
(HIAS) to share the medical
costs of Arkady Markh, 21,
whose family was allowed to
leave the Soviet Union for
Italy last summer. The
Markhs were granted
landed immigrant status
but their son was excluded
until they could show they
could pay his medical bills.
Kibutzim Form
Food Cooperative
TEL AVIV (JNI) — Forty
northern kibutzim resolved
this week to market joingly
their own food products
under the 'Food and the
Kibutz" label.
This union, of the same
kibutzim which earlier
formed the "Granot"
cooperative (Israel's largest
livestock feed producer),
will provide the first com-
mercial competition to
Tnuva, the Histadrut's
giant cooperative market-:
ing organization.
Due to strong opposition
by Tnuva, the new coopera-
tive will only market prod-
ucts Which are not currently
exclusive to Tnuva. In-
creased competition result-
ing from the entrance of a
third producer - distributor,
alongside the private sector,
could lower prices.
