Kaniuk Character
Patterned After
Judean Queen

Yoram Kaniuk's new
novel, "The Story of Aunt
Shlomozion the Great"
(Harper and Row) is domi-
nated by the larger-than-
life central character who
resembles her namesake,
an imperious queen who
once ruled Judea.
Aunt Shlomozion em-
bodies the past; her father
was one of the first Jewish
landowners of Tel Aviv and
her mother was from an old
family of Jewish mystics.
She treats everyone (with
the exception of her father
and her husband) with
scorn and derision for fail-
ing to live up to the
standards of her majestic
background.
A nephew, Aminadav,
serves as the novel's nar-
rator. It is Aminadav who
tries to unravel the intri-
cate web that binds the lives
of his parents, uncles, aunts
and cousins to this ruthless,
yet engaging woman who
evokes a mixture of awe and
fear.
Kaniuk's previous books
include "Adam Resur-
rected," "The Acrophile,"
"Himmo, King of
Jerusalem," and "Rockin-
ghorse."
