Dr. Covensky to Deliver
Hadassah-Midrasha Lecture

Dr. Milton Covensky, pro-
fessor of history at Wayne
State University, will pre-
sent a talk on "Hasidism in
Western Europe" 11 a.m.
Thursday in the Louis and
Esther LaMed Auditorium
of the main United Hebrew
Schools. He will be the final
lecturer in the Midrasha-
Hadassah mini-mester
series.
Dr. Covensky earned BA,
MA and PhD degrees at the
University of Michigan. He
is the author of two books.
Dr. Covensky has re-
ceived an award for creative
teaching from the Michigan
Adult Education Society
and an award for excellence
in teaching from Wayne
State University.

Jewish Poetess

BONN — The Jewish
poet Rose Auslaender is the
winner of the 1980 Ros-
witha Memorial Medal. The
award is presented by the
city of Bad Gandersheim,
West Germany to com-
memorate the first woman
author in the German lan-
guage, Roswitha von Gan-
dersheim, who wrote be-
tween the years 960 and 973
CE.
Auslaender was born in
1907 in. Austria-Hungary.
During the Nazi period she
lived in the United States,
returning to the 'Federal
Republic in 1965.
In the presentation
speech, Auslaender's work
was praised for its "shor-
thand of fear," its shaping of
language to reflect the feat
that the "annihilation
madness" of the Third Reich
may recur.
Since 1965, Auslaender
has lived in a Jewish old-
age home in DuesseldOrf.
Illness kept her from accept-
ing the prize in person.

Gershon Avner, president
of Haifa University, spoke
at a reception in his honor
on Oct. 16 at the home of Mr.
and Mrs. Michael Stein.
Avner gave an overview
of the present situation in
the Middle East. He felt a
danger from the powerful
Arab blackmail of the West.
However, the people of Is-
rael still remain resolute
with a strong feeling of
nationalism, he said.

MILAN — Eleven Ita-
lians were sentenced this
week to up to '40 months in
prison for carrying wooden
crosses and shouting anti-
Semitic slogans during the
European Cup cham-
pionship basketball game in
March 1979 involving a
