THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS
Shapiro Fund
A history-making story in
Jewish efforts to establish
farming communities in
North America is related by
a Detroit area man who re-
calls the pioneering efforts
of his 96-year-old father.
Ted Frazis of Oak Park
tells how in 1914, after 10
years of the industrial life in
the northeastern United
States, his father Harry de-
cided to emigrate to Sas-
katchewan, Canada.' The
senior Frazis settled in the
farming community of
Edenbridge.

HAIFA (JTA) — A
friendly "invasion" of some
7,000 officers and enlisted
men of the U.S. Sixth Fleet
filled the streets of Haifa,
Israel's largest port city,
Sunday as the huge aircraft
carrier John F. Kennedy
and her flotilla of escorts
dropped anchor in the bay.
The ships are on a 10-day
goodwill visit.
As the thousands of
sailors went on shore leave,
Rear Admiral Crawford
Easterling, commander of
Operational Task Force 60
of the Sixth Fleet, paid a
courtesy call on Mayor Av-
araham Gurel at the Haifa
City Hall. They exchanged
souvenirs.
The Admiral said the
visit by the American naval
force had a two-fold pur-
pose: to provide rest and re-
laxation for the ships' crews
and to stress the friendship
betwen the U.S. and Isr?el.
With thousands of exub-
erant American sailors
exploring this city of a quar-
ter million, local police and
U.S. Navy shore patrols
joined forces to ensure good
order and decorum.
France to Spend
$3.5 Billion
to Arm Saudis
PARIS (JTA) — France
and Saudi Arabia last week
signed an arms contract
providing for the sale of $3.5
billion of French-made war-
ships, helicopters and mis-
siles to the oil-rich king-
dom. The contract is one of
the largest ever signed by a
West European country.
France will build four
missile warships and two
tankers for the Saudi navy
and will equip them with its
latest model of sea-to-sea
missiles, the Otomat.
France will also provide
Saudi Arabia with Dauphin
helicopters armed with air-
to-sea missiles and an
elaborate radar computer
enabling them to serve as
the "fire guidance brains"
for the Saudi warships.
Several hundred Saudi
technicians and naval per-
sonnel will be trained in
France and French
engineers will help main-
tain the Saudi vessels.
Justice delayed is worse
than injustice.

veloped community in need

Frazis applied for a
homestead in 1915 and
the rest of the family
moved in that spring. The
family and the commu-
nity prospered up until
the time of the Depres-
sion.
Following the Depression
and the outbreak of war the
"experiment" at Eden-
bridge went downhill. With
a dismal future on the hori-
zon, the youth of the colony
joined the general popula-
tion in an exodus back to the
urban cities and towns of
North America.
Frazis' other son, Walter,
e
VINCEN,'O'S
and his daughter, Pat
Freedman, also live in the
Detroit area. Frazis has 11
grandchildren and 10 great
grandchildren.
