Sermon and Story Inspire Poem
Attending Yom Kippur
services at Cong. T'chiyah,
Dr. Guy Stern was inspired
by the rabbi's sermon to re-
call the story, "The Legend
of Kuty" by Efriam Frisch.
Dr. Stern, vice president
and provost at Wayne State
University later wrote the
accompanying poem based
on the story and the sermon.
In "The Legend of Kuty,"
a small congregation in a
shtetl, having just suffered
a pogrom, huddles in their
synagogue.
Suddenly there is a
rustling in the aisles, then
in the benches. Men and
women in ancient
clothes, the men's talesim

Yom Kippur Prayer
By DR. GUY STERN
A tale recalled by Chassidim
narrates that on Yom Kippur Day -
the dead arise and Elohim
sends his Messiah while we pray.
From downcast Jews he walked away:
That Age did not His promise earn.
We too, I fear, can't halt his stay.
Please give us strength, oh God, to ready his return!
people recedes, the rustle in
the air dies away. And the
rabbi, prone on the ground
before God, moans: "Forgive
us, God, that we were too
weak to receive your Mes-
siah."

TEL AVIV (JTA) — Pre-
mier Menahem Begin has
offered to extend aid to the
victims of the earthquake in
Algeria if the Red Cross and
the government of Algeria
give their approval.
The offer was made in a
cable to a local Arab com-
mittee aiding earthquake
victims which has set up its
headquarters in the village
of Baqa el Ghabiyeh. Israeli
Health Minister Eliezer
Shostak said that medical
teams and medicine were
standing by, pending the re-
sponses from the Algerian

Cross.
According to Algeria's

20,000 people were killed
and more than 60,000
people were injured in the
Oct. 10 quake which flat-
tened the city of Al Asnam.
