NEW YEAR'S GREETINGS
The New Year is a time to
give thanks for past
blessings and to look for-
ward to the future with

do so strengthened by the
cultural and religious heri-
tage of our Judaic tradi-
tion.
Best wishes for a healthy
and peaceful New Year.

Hits House
Education Bill
WASHINGTON — The
American Jewish Congress
last month assailed an
amendment to the 1981 De-
partment of Education
appropriation bill, recently
passed by the House of
Representatives, barring
the department from spend-
ing any funds for the pur-
pose of "preventing the im-
plementation of programs of
voluntary prayer or medita-
tion" in the public schools.
Prof. Abraham S. Golds-
tein, chairman of the
American Jewish Congress
Commission on Law and So-
cial Action, called the bill
"the latest in a series of un-
successful Congressional
attempts to overturn the de-
cisions of the Supreme
Court prohibiting religious
exercises in the public
schools."
The American Jewish
Congress spokesman noted
that a House subcommittee
has not yet completed its
hearings on the so-called
Helms Amendment, which
would deprive the federal
courts of jurisdiction in de-
termining challenges to
state and local laws calling
for "voluntary prayer" in
public schools.
