. . . in the north suburban
area . . . and at no extra
charge.
AMUSING INCIDENT
happened recently to De-
nnis Vatsis, partner with
brother Ted in the Stafford's
Restaurants . . . Customer
came up to him and said,
"Dennis, if you are re-
elected, will I get an extra
pickle with my corned beef
sandwich?" . . . He is an in-
cumbent official running
again for West Bloomfield
trustee.
MIRIAM RUBIN, chef
at the Rhinoceros on
Riopelle downtown, is the
localite daughter of Iry and
Diane Rubin, whose youth-
fulness belies her extensive
training in cooking exper-
tise . . . She's an epitome of
the saying that "Good
things come in little pack-
ages" . . . Miriam was at the
Four Seasons in New York
and Caucus Club here .. .
plus being graduate of the
Culinary Institute.
A visit to Rhinoceros after
one of the GOP convention
evenings was delightful .. .
and worth much conversa-
tion because of the decor,
service and food . . . In 1904
it was a stable, and a couple
of bars afterward, Norman
Schwartz took the old an-
tiques that people used to
throw away, patching here
'n there to make it into a
very warns, intimate dining
and drinking spot . . . and
opened Oct. 1, 1978.
Our excellent waitress,
Michele Beaufer, so very
efficient, always smiling
and effervescent with
courtesy, brought our

Miriam's very wonderful
French onion soup in a
crock ... full bodied and
beautifully textured .
plus superb hamburgers
on onion rolls ... and
made-at-Rhinoceros
potato chips.
Also indicative of Nor-
man's very fine help is most
capable and friendly waiter
Jim Daly.
MATT PRENTIS,
youhg gent responsible for
most of those fine dishes at
Deli Unique, formerly
Northgate, on Greenfield
and 10 Mile . . . is its new
owner.
MAKING BIG strides
. . . is Ralph Yamron and his
orchestra.
FLORINE MARK has
another honor to her credit
. . . The president of Weight
Watchers hereabouts was
given a community
achievement award for pub-
lic service by Dr. Gertrude
Gordon, principal of the
Helen Field Trainable
School in Detroit.
Without much fanfare,
Florine for the past five
years has been holding
Weight Watchers classes for
the mentally and physically
impaired in various schools
and workshops throughout
Metropolitan Detroit . . . All
classes are on scholarships
(free or very minor fees)
provided by Weight Watch-
ers . . . plus the donation of
scales to all 65 students at
the Helen Field School.
WESTERN OMELET-
TES • will be made at the
Bijou restaurant on South-
field only if a customer in-
sists upon it, said our waiter
. . . even though a couple of
other omelettes were on the
luncheon menu . . . In many
instances this is construed
as a bit of laziness on the
chef's part .. .
The omelette I did have
from Bijou's menu, with
chicken livers, was very
good even though the livers
were on top and not inside
its fold . . . If you like a very
bland salad, have their
house dressing . . . and be-
ware of bones when eating
fish . . . The waiter debones
it for you at tableside .. .
without much light.
FROM NATION'S Res-
taurant News . . . titled
"The responsibility of the
food critic."
"What is the responsibil-
ity of the food critic?
"Manhattan Menus, a
newly published guidebook
of New York restaurants,
includes a chapter in which
the nation's top restaurant
critics try to answer that
question.
"Nation's Restaurant
News has excerpted a series
of those responses so that
readers can know a little
more about how a restau-
rant critic thinks.
"Craig Claiborne, New
York Times: To evaluate
a restaurant as sincerely
and responsibly as possi-
ble, and to not let your
private prejudices get in
your way. You try to keep
your emotions out of it. If
