LISTENING
POST

WHILE DRIVING in his
car headed for Livonia, Ray
Abrams couldn't believe his
ears . . . A helicopter traffic
report over the radio told of
the Thunderbowl Lanes in
Allen Park being blown
apart.
And so Ray's Cushion 'n
Cue at the lanes is no more
. . . as high winds of hur-
ricane force played havoc
with the area.
There was a lot of senti-
mentality involved in this
locale . . . It had been the
first of four Cushion 'n Cue
places that Shirley, and Ray
would own ... Only six
months after it had opened,
they purchased the spot in
1965 . . . Shirley worked
nights and Ray's father,
Henry, who used to own
Star Recreation on Linwood
and Blaine many years be-
fore, and had told Ray this
was the perfect spot for him
to begin, ran it days . . . In
the meanwhile, Ray himself
was still managing the Fed-
eral Department Store in
St. Clair Shores . . . Henry's
words were never truer as it
became the most profitable
of all Ray's four Cushion 'n
Cue operations . . . He, still
owns the ones in Oak Park
and Livonia.
The entire roof at Thun-
derbowl Lanes had been
blown off . . . Ray asked
George Prybyla, bossman at
Thunderbovil Lanes, and
outgoiiig president of the
Bowling Proprietor's Asso-
ciation, if When the place
was rebuilt, he would have
better cooling at his billiard
sector . . . "You'll not only
have better cooling," said
George, "but you'll also
have a ceiling."
BIRTHDAY CON-
GRATS . . . to Dental Doc
Larry Haber on number 40.
GAIL ABEL,daughter of
Marcia and trumpet vir-
tuoso Jerry Abel, has
achieved a life-long ambi-
tion . . . While a child, she
loved animals and always
wanted to care for them .. .
Now 23-years-old, she is
doing it with a June degree
from Michigan State . . . as
a Doctor of Veterinary
Medicine.
BIRTHDAY CON-
GRATS . . . to Lou "Mr.
Brown" Berman . . . on his
61st.
MARK STEVENS is
about the only disc jockey
around with three different
programs . . . on three
different stations
WCZY-AM is religion,
WCZY-FM is beautiful
music and WPON - AM is
country-western.
BIRTHDAY CON-
GRATS . . . to. Edith
Hoffman (Bernie).
MOST OF THE recent
Republican Convention
equipment used by 40
members of the media (UPI,
AP, CBS, NBC, Time,
Newsweek, Wall Street
Journal, Washington Post,
etc.) was rented to them by
the family operation of Bet-

VINCENZO'S

ter Business Equipment on
Nine Mile in Ferndale .. .
Toby and Manny Chudnow
and their three sons, Ed,
Mike and Evan . . . A fourth
son, Jordon, couldn't help
since he lives in California.
They supplied everything
from refrigerators and TV
sets to desks, typewriters,
copiers, bulletin boards, ta-
bles, chairs, coat racks,
water coolers, coffee urns
. . . and much, much more
. . . even bagels for visiting
New Yorkers.
Everything . . . except the
bagels, is being sold to the
public at discount, although
only used for a 10-day
period . . . Toby, Manny and
the boys couldra find a
warehouse big enough to
store all the stuff . . . and it's
piled to the ceiling at their
Nine Mile store.
BIRTHDAY CON-
GRATS . . . to Harold Allen
on number 55.
GET WELL WISHES
. . . to Charles Gershenson
. recuperating at home
after minor surgery.

CALLING LOU MIL-
LER . . . Remember back in
1964 while bowling in the
Domestic Linen League
-when you racked up a
healthy 660 series? . . . You
carried the proof around to
show disbelievers . . . At one
spot, someone forgot to give
it back to you . . . You
searched all over before re-
minding yourself 'where it
was . . . and then in the
middle of the night woke up
an entire household to pick
up the sheet.
LOOKING BACK ON
Columns Of Yesteryears .. .
OCT. 10, 1969 . . . *Want

WTAK Radio, . 6 a.m. to 9
a.m.. . . Warren, who is also
attending Detroit College of
Lawin the evenings, has his
own talk show from Jim's
Garage eatery downtown, 1
p.m. to 2 p.m."
OCT. 31, 1969 . . . "Frank
Winton remembers when he
bought his first car for $50
. . . With his custom-built
Eldorado Cadillac at Serv-
ice Tire Co., Frank looked at
all the used tires lying
around and remarked, 'Boy,
how I used to drool over any-
thing ever resembling these
tires — and then was real
happy to buy whatever I
could for 50 cents.' "
