THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS 26 Friday, July 25, 1980 Italian-American Cuisine Danny Raskin's 18211 JOHN R LISTENING POST WHILE DRIVING in his car headed for Livonia, Ray Abrams couldn't believe his ears . . . A helicopter traffic report over the radio told of the Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park being blown apart. And so Ray's Cushion 'n Cue at the lanes is no more . . . as high winds of hur- ricane force played havoc with the area. There was a lot of senti- mentality involved in this locale . . . It had been the first of four Cushion 'n Cue places that Shirley, and Ray would own ... Only six months after it had opened, they purchased the spot in 1965 . . . Shirley worked nights and Ray's father, Henry, who used to own Star Recreation on Linwood and Blaine many years be- fore, and had told Ray this was the perfect spot for him to begin, ran it days . . . In the meanwhile, Ray himself was still managing the Fed- eral Department Store in St. Clair Shores . . . Henry's words were never truer as it became the most profitable of all Ray's four Cushion 'n Cue operations . . . He, still owns the ones in Oak Park and Livonia. The entire roof at Thun- derbowl Lanes had been blown off . . . Ray asked George Prybyla, bossman at Thunderbovil Lanes, and outgoiiig president of the Bowling Proprietor's Asso- ciation, if When the place was rebuilt, he would have better cooling at his billiard sector . . . "You'll not only have better cooling," said George, "but you'll also have a ceiling." BIRTHDAY CON- GRATS . . . to Dental Doc Larry Haber on number 40. Toby and Manny Chudnow and their three sons, Ed, Mike and Evan . . . A fourth son, Jordon, couldn't help since he lives in California. They supplied everything from refrigerators and TV sets to desks, typewriters, copiers, bulletin boards, ta- bles, chairs, coat racks, water coolers, coffee urns . . . and much, much more . . . even bagels for visiting New Yorkers. Everything . . . except the bagels, is being sold to the public at discount, although only used for a 10-day period . . .
