Consumer Price
Index Up Again

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Israel's consumer price
index rose by 4.6 percent in
June, according to the Cen-
tral Bureau of Statistics.
The rise was moderate
compared to the 10.2 per-
cent upsurge in May but
was, nevertheless, high for
this time of the year when
large quantities of inexpen-
sive fruits and vegetables
are available. It brought the
cumulative price index up
50 percent since the begin-
ning of the year.
The Treasury expressed
satisfaction that the index
did not go above five percent
last month. The opposition
claimed the June rise was
yet another indication that
the government has lost
control of the economy. His-
tadrut Secretary General
Yeruham Meshel observed
that this moderate rise is
the highest in the last ten
years."

AJCongress Files Motion
in the Trial of Fedorenko

NEW YORK — The
American Jewish Congress
filed a motion with the
United States Supreme
Court this week seeking
permission to submit a
friend-of-the-court brief in
the case of a former concen-
tration camp guard who lied
about his Nazi record ac-
cording to Jacqueline K.
Levine, chair of the Con-
gress' National Governing
Council.
The application to file
was submitted by the con-
gress in its own name and in
behalf of the National
Jewish Community Rela-
tions Advisory Council, a
coalition of 11 national
Jewish organizations and
108 local Jewish commu-
nity councils across the
country.
The former Nazi
Feodor Fedorenko — con-
cealed his past as a guard in
the Nazi death camp of
Treblinka when he entered
the United States in 1949
and again when he applied
for citizenship in 1970.
A U.S. District Court
judge in Florida ruled in
1978 that Fedorenko
could keep his citizen-
ship, despite his admis-
sion that he had falsely
portrayed himself as a
Polish farmer who had
been forced to work as a
laborer for the Nazis.
Fedorenko denied tes-
timony by six Israeli sur-
vivors of Treblinka that
they had seen him torture
and shoot prisoners
there.
When the District Court

ruling was appealed by the
Department of Justice, the
congress submitted a
friend-of-the-court brief op-
posing the ruling. The Fifth
Circuit Court of Appeals re-
versed the lower court and
ordered that Fedorenko's
citizenship be revoked.
Fedorenko then appealed
to the United States Sup-
reme Court, where his case
will be argued during the
next term, beginning in Oc-
tober.

NY Herut Office
Taken Over
by JDL Group

NEW YORK (JTA) —
Four members of the Jewish
Defense League (JDL) took
over the office of the United
Zionist Revisionists of
America (Herut) in mid-
town Manhattan last week
in protest against the
policies of Premier
Menahem Begin of Israel.
According to JDL
spokesman Dov Becker, "we
are demanding that Herut
gain the immediate release
of (JDL founder) Rabbi Meir
Kahane and we are de-
manding that Herut return
to the principles of (Zeev)
.Jabotinsky by demanding
that Begin annex im-
mediately all the territories
now held by Israel." Asked
what Herut here can do
about this, Becker said "we
are certain Herut can do
what we are demanding."
The group left after three
hours when they received a
Herut statement requesting
freedom for Kahane.
