Rabinowitz said that "to
resolve the conflict inherent
in the rabbi's role, each of us
must ponder the variety of
changes which influence
and define our choices and
options." He said that, in
the course of a rabbi's
career, he "will recapitulate
the historic changes of the
rabbinic role," and, "in se-
quence, he may experiment
with each of the historic
functions of the rabbi."

nded by Defense Minister
Ezer Weizman despite ob-
jections raised by military
government officials.
They had been removed
last week to an abandoned
refugee camp in the Dead
Sea valley where the only
living quarters are crumbl-
ing clay huts without lights
or other utilities. The mili-
tary government's action
was protested by many Is-
raelis.
The Shumali family
filed an appeal with the
Supreme Court accusing
the military government
of collective punishment
in violation of the Fourth
Geneva Convention.
Jurists in the defense es-
tablishment expressed
doubts that the banishment
would stand up to a court
challenge. The Defense
Ministry said it was revers-
ing the order for humanita-
rian reasons.
It was the second time in
less than a year that the De-
fense Ministry reversed a
deportation order. The ear-
lier case involved Mayor
Bassam Shaka of Nablus
who was to have been expel-
led for anti-Israel remarks
he allegedly made in the
'course of a private conver-
sation with a military gov-
ernment official.

ADL Protests
SBA Decision
on Hasidim

CHAIM GRADE

NEW YORK — The
Anti-Defamation League of
Bnai Brith charged recently
that the Federal Small
Business Administration's
(SBA) refusal to designate
Hasidim as a "socially and
economically disadvan-
taged group" constitutes
religious discrimination.
ADL national director
Nathan Perlmutter called
on the agency to rescind last
month's decision that de-
nies the group eligibility for
minority business assis-
tance programs.
Perlmutter, in a letter to
SBA Administrator A. Ver-
non Weaver, explained that
the Hasidim did not request
aid for religious purposes,
but for secular reasons.
