American Jewish Press
Association will preSent its
Golda Meir Award to jour-
nalist Robert St. John dur-
ing its three-day convention
in Washington, June 11-13.

1976 to Si Kenen of Near
East Report and the
America Israel Public Af-
fairs Committee.
The citation cites St. John
for his "lifetime love affair
with Israel." He has visited
the country 29 times,
covered all of its wars, and
written more than two
dozen books, including
_ biographies of David Ben-
Gurion, Abba Eban and
Eliezer Ben-Yehuda, the
father of modern Hebrew.
A gentile, St. John has
spoken on numerous oc-
casions on behalf of the
United Jewish Appeal
and Israel Bonds.
During the three-day
meetings the AJPA will
meet with Congressional
leaders. Speakers at its
meetings will include
Herschel Blumberg, na-
tional chairman of the UJA;
Israel Minister of Informa-
tion Zvi Brosh; Morris
Amitay of AIPAC; Max
Kampelman of the Anti-
Defamation League; Bnai
Brith President Jack J.
Spitzer, Dan Leon of the
World Zionist Organization
and Dr. Howard Lenhoff of
the American Association
for Ethiopian Jewry.
St. John will _receive his
award at the June 12
dinner. Israeli Ambassador
Ephraim Evron will speak.
A June 13 panel discus-
sion will focus on the Middle
East. Participants include
Joseph Polakoff, Washing-
ton bureau chief of the
Jewish Telegraphic
Agency; Barry Schweid of
the Associated Press; Si
Kenen; Bernard and Mar-
vin Kalb of CBS; Wolf
Blitzer, Washington corre-
spondent for the Jerusalem
Post; and a number of Is-
raeli journalists.

Iranian Jews Jailed, Probed New

PARIS (JTA) — A
number of Iranian Jews
were arrested last week and
others have been called in to
the Teheran police head-
quarters on_ various
trumped-up investigations,
according to Iranian resi-
dents in Paris.
Certain Iranian sources
in Paris say that according
to mail received from their
families and friends still in
Teheran, more than 100
Jews are currently in prison
on a variety of charges,
mainly for alleged illegal
economic activities or for
spreading "Zionist prop-
aganda."
These sources say that
many Jews are moving out
of their homes and staying
with Moslem friends to
avoid interrogation and
possible arrest. Others are
waiting for visas to leave
the country.
Two Jews, the Daniel-
pour brothers, were last
month sentenced to
death by an Islamic tri-
bunal, but were finally
pardoned after various
international organiza-
tions intervened on their
behalf.
A French weekly `V.S.D.,
" reports, on the other hand,
that a large number of Ira-
nian Jews have returned to
their former homes" over

NEW YORK (JTA) —
Rabbi Moshe Feinstein,
president of the Union of
Orthodox Rabbis of the
United States and Canada
for the past 12 years, was
unanimously re-elected to
another term at the organ-
ization's annual conven-
tion. In his address to the
several hundred delegates
and visiting rabbis Feins-
tein stressed the need for
Jewish education to make
the Jewish people aware of
the vital role of Torah and
halakha in their daily lives.

Congressmen
Oppose Sale

WASHINGTON — Con-
gressmen William M.
Brodhead (D-17th District)
and William S. Broomfield
(R-19th District) have gone
on -record opposing the pro-
posed sale of U.S. engines to
power Iraqi naval frigates.

Broomfield, the ranking
Republican on the House
Foreign Affairs Committee,
and Brodhead signed a let-
ter to President Carter that
the U.S. cannot "acquiese to
Iraq's support for interna-
tional terrorism" by selling
Iraq military equipment.
