Life of Taz
" 'Taz,' Rabbi David

Halevi" by Rabbi Elijah J.
Schochet (Ktav) is the story
of the halakhic authority
who authored the Turei
Zahab, a series of commen-
taries on the four parts of
the Shulhan Arukh.
Halevi, more popularly
known as the `Taz,' lived in
the 17th Century, but his
legal decisions- are still
studied today by serious
udents of Jewish law.
Halevi's children were
ictims of the pogroms of
the era and also believers in
the self-proclaimed Mes-
siah, Shabtai Zevi. Halevi's
writings reflect the eco-
nomic, social and psycholog-
ical upheaval of this par-
ticular period in history.
Rabbi Schochet was or-
dained at the Jewish
Theological Seminary of
America. He is the author of
several books and serves as
professor of codes at the
University of Judaism in
Los Angeles.

The first annual Ham-
ilton Place 1 mile Fun
Run will be held this
weekend and members
and guests are all invited.
To make sure everyone
gets through it without
blisters, we talked with
Hamilton Place member
Charley Blanchard for
some tips. Blanchard has
been a serious runner for
the last ten years and ran
in the Boston and Detroit
Marathons for the last
two years. He says there
are a few important
things to remember when
running.
"First of all you need a
good pair of running
shoes". says Charley.
"That's obvious." It's a
well known fact that
many running injuries oc-
cur from running with
the wrong type of shoes.
Charley says it's not a
good idea to eat too close
to the start of a race.
"Three -hours is usually
the - cut off period for

eating. If the weather Is
warm, I suggest drinking
plenty of liquids. Start
drinking as early as the
day before the race until
about an hour before race
time so your body can
store the water. If the
race is long, drink small
amounts along the way."
Blanchard goes on to say
that adequate stretching
and limbering up before
any race is important.
"Before a race I get up
very early and run 3 or so
miles at a decent pace.
After I shower and it's
time for the race, I feel
like it's the middle of the
day and I run better."
When asked about this
Sunday's Hamilton Place
Annual Fun Run Charley
said, "1 mile is a pretty
innocent distance for a
race." Unless you're ac-
customed to running
though, Blanchard ad-
vised, "ease into a sensi-
ble program of about 1/2
hour of running a day."

ging programs and Sun-
day's Fun Run is available
