NEW YORK — Work-
men's Circle has protested
pressure being brought by
Israel against the use of
U.S. Jewish communal
funds for Russian immig-
rants who opt to go to coun-
tries other than Israel.
Bernard Backer,
president of Workmen's
Circle, stated that the
organization sympathizes
with Israel's desire to ,in-
crease her Jewish popula-
tion and offer haven to
Soviet Jews.
"Nonetheless," he said,
"freedom of choice for the
immigrant should prevail.
It is in the tradition of
America - to support the
right of any citizen of any
country to emigrate to any
land of his choice."
