Unfavorable Picture of Jews
May Cause Ban of Merchant
A citizens review commit-
tee in Midland is recom-
mending that "The Mer-
chant of Venice," a play by
William Shakespeare
which contains offensive
references to Jews, be
banned from classroom dis-
cussion in local high school
literature classes.
Yet the Jewish couple
who first objected to the use
of the play said last week
that they do not agree with
the committee's decision
and that the play is accept-
able as long as the students
are cautioned that the char-
acter of Shylock was taken
from the most unflattering
stereotype of Jews during
the 16th Century, a time of
intense anti-Semitism.

Helena Silverman, mother
of a high school sophomore.
Her husband told reporters
that by banning the play
from the classroom, the
committee is "afraid to
grasp the problem and face
it the way it is."
The play is still in the
school library and will not
be taken from the shelves
before the school board
makes its final decision
April 14, according to
School Superintendent
Robert Owen.

A New Titus?
Editor, The Jewish News:
In the times of Christ the
Jewish people had a Roman
general — Titus — deter-
mined to destroy the Jewish
state. He did it by building a
wall around Jerusalem and
it took him three years to do
it. He called it "re-
establishing Rome's sover-
eign military power."
In our times the Jewish
people have an American
President — Jimmy Carter
— determined to destroy the
Jewish state. He is using his
entire presidential term to
do it. He calls it "establish-
ing a comprehensive peace
in the entire Middle East."
