Arms Sale to Egypt Causes Concern About Israel Defense
NEW YORK (JTA) —
Ephraim Evron, Israel's
Ambassador to the United
States, told the Conference
of Presidents of Major
American Jewish Organ-
izations that Israel was
worried about the quantity,
quality and dates of deliv-
ery of newly-announced
U.S. arms for Egypt.

members, who attended the
off-the-record briefing, said
Evron reported that Israel
was now giving intensive
study to the Egyptian arms
package and its effect on Is-
rael's security.
Without predicting what
his government's official
policy would be, Evron ex-
pressed concern that the
qualitative gap between Is-
rael and Egypt would be
narrowed, if not closed,
under the terms of the pro-
posed sale of U.S. advanced
weapons to Cairo.
He noted that in the
past, Israel had Ameri-
can arms while its Arab
adversaries were equip-
ped with Soviet weapons
and jets. Because the U.S.
arms were generally of
superior quality, he said,
Farmers Storm the Knesset
JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Some 25,000 angry farmers
from all parts of Israel
stormed the Knesset build-
ing on Wednesday in a furi-
ous protest against the
Likud government's ag-
ricultural policies which
they Paid are driving them
to bankruptcy. They pelted
Knesset guards and police
with tomatoes, eggs, snow-
balls and stones. Police
counter-attacked with high
pressure fire hoses.
One policeman was in-
jured by a stone and at least
one demonstrator was in-
jured and hospitalized.

Israel enjoyed a qualita-
tive advantage, even
though the Arabs had
greater amounts of mili-
tary equipment.
But with the proposal to
equip Egypt with large
amounts of U.S. war
materiel, Evron was re-
ported as having said the Is-
raeli advantage would be
lost.
Evron voiced particular
concern about the U.S. offer
to sell Egypt the F-15
fighter bomber, regarded as
the most lethal conven-
tional weapon in the Ameri-
can arsenal.
Israel is now taking de-
livery on F-15s it contracted
for two years ago. Some of
Israel's F-15s had been de-
stined to Iran under the
demonstration,
The
which became one of the
worst riots in Jerusalem in
many years, was triggered
by the government's reduc-
tion of price support sub-
sidies for agricultural prod-
ucts. The farmers charged
that the government was
subsidizing frozen beef im-
ports while local poultry
farmers were suffering.
The Farmers' wrath
was directed mainly at
Agriculture Minister
Ariel Sharon, who they
accused of devoting all
his time to planting set-
tlements in the occupied
territories but doing
nothing for the farmers.
Sharon is presently
abroad:
Several Knesset mem-
bers who tried to mollify the
demonstrators were booed
and hooted down.
The Knesset Economic
Committee called a special
session to discuss agricul-
tural problems and invited
representatives of the far-
mers to present their com-
plaints. The committee was
told by Dov Peleg, of the
Kibutz Artzi movement
that even old established
kibutzim, the pride of Is-
rael's agriculture, are being
crushed by deficits and un-
employement.
Yitzhak Nehemia, of the
Negev settlements, said the
moshavim there were
gradually being destroyed.
"All their imports will not
even cover the interest on
their debts," he said.
Yehuda Saadi, of the
Agricultural Center, said
the protestors repre-
sented the entire agricul-
tural sector regardless of
political affiliations. The
thousands of demon-
strators included young
farmers and grizzled vet-
erans of the pioneer era.
One observer noted, The
public who came today to
the Knesset represented
some 100,000 voters. If this
situation continues, not one
of them will vote for Likud
in the next elections."
Government sources dis-
missed the demonstration,
claiming that the farmers
were the most pampered
section of Israeli society.
Shah. When the Khomeini
regime took power and can-
celled the arms deal, the
planes were offered to Is-
rael.
