$5 Million Gift
to Princeton U.
from Saudis

NEW YORK — Saudi
Arabia will give Princeton
University $5 million to ex-
pand its teaching and re-
search in the life sciences.
In turn, Princeton has
agreed to help the Univer-
sity of Riyadh to develop its
own capabilities in the same
field.
Officials of higher educa-
tion organizations said that,
as far as they knew, the $5
million gift, the product of
five years of negotiations,
was the largest single con-
tribution by an Arab or
other oil-producing state to
an American college or uni-
versity.
The separate • consulting
agreement contains a pro-
vision that students, schol-
ars and technical experts
will be selected to take part
only on the basis of "merit."
Similar arrangements at
other universities have
been proposed but have fal-
len through because it was
not clear that women, Jews
and members of other
minority groups would be
allowed to participate.
"We think the agreement
as written is adequately
protective of the interests of
minorities," said Ira Sil-
verman, director of special
programs for the American
Jewish Committee, which
has challenged several pro-
posed agreements at other
institutions.

Lawyer Slain
by Mistake

MADRID — An Arab at-
tacker, apparently seeking
to kill a Jewish leader, mis-
takenly killed a Spanish
lawyer on Monday, accord-
ing to police.
The police arrested a sus-
pect and identified him as
Said Ali Salman, 27, a
Palestinian carrying a
passport issued in Oman.
The Palestine Liberation
Organization has denied
involvement in the shooting
of Adolpho Cotelo Villar-
real, the 50-year-old
lawyer.
Salman was carrying a
photograph of Max Mazin,
president of the Spanish
branch of Bnai Brith, who
lived in the same apartment
building as Villarreal and
looks like him, the police
said.

residence program.
