CAIRO — Egyptian
police stormed a health
,clinic north of Cairo last
week to arrest a man who
was holding seven hostages
and demanding that Israeli
Ambassador Eliahu Ben-
Elissar be expelled and that

LISTENING
POST

CALL IT AN embarras-

sing or a kibbitzing moment
. . . whatever . . . in Boca
Raton, Fla., recently .. .
with Olds dealer Jerry
Glassman working hard
trying to change a flat tire
on his car . . . and receiving
verbal assistance from
South Lyons Ford dealer
Bob Siegel . . . while Joe
Deutch of Paul's Drugs
stood around telling them
both they didn't know what
they were doing . . . (Jerry
and Debbie's daughter Le-
nore, is married to Joe and
Elsie's son Harvey).
On their condominium
porch having breakfast,
David and Gertie Matz
watched the "show" . . . with
Dave yelling to Jerry that
he doesn't know what to do
when it comes to changing
tires . . . Jerry finally
finished . . . and instead of
releasing the jack slowly, he
did so quickly . . . and his
car came crashing to the
ground!
That evening, everyone
went to dinner in an AMC
Concord.

MANNY' CHUDNOW

didn't think twice why wife
Toby took him out of the
house for a half-hour .. .
When they returned, about
100 people were there to yell
"Surprise!" on number 50
. . . Even the guys in the
card game he's been in for
22 years didn't let on .. .
Evidently wouldn't have
mattered if they did .. .
Manny even refused to be-
lieve it when two people told
him about the surprise af-
fair for him!

WHEN BEN GORNEY,

ad man for The Jewish
News, was being prepped at
Sinai Hospital for his recent
pacemaker surgery, the
nurse said, "You can't wear
-your robe and you can't
wear your slippers." . . . Ben
replied, "Can I wear a
smile?"
CONGRATS ... to Vir-
ginia and Albert Siegle,
McDonnell Towers resi-
dents . . . on their 56th wed-
ding anniversary.
AN ENTIRE WALL of
the living room on Muirland
Ave., where Pauline and
Oscar Rappaport have lived
so many years, is now
covered by the latest tapes-
try she has made . . . All
over the house are Pauline's
interesting tapestries, but
this one was a year in the
making.
How did she get started?
. . . One day, while knitting,
Pauline saw a painting on
the wall given to her and
Oscar by Pauline's fine ar-
tist brother, Max Shaye .. .
Just like that "I became a
hooker."
The more than 100 people
who came to their open
house recently were awed
by Pauline's wonderful new
tapestry . . . but she also
made most of the delicious
hot and cold hors d'oeuvres,

Alter, after much persua-
sion, was talked into mak-
ing her first airplane flight
-in order to be on. hand for the
birth of her first grandchild
to son Harvey and wife
Alice . . . When she arrived
in Denver, Rose wired
hubby Joe, who couldn't get
away, "Have arrived safely,
but will walk back." . . . (In
her heart, Rose has always
felt the Wright- brothers
were wrong.)

"Harry Koltonow proudly
displays a chandelier at his
Northwest Electric Supply
that interior designers will
go ga-ga- over . . . In fact, of
the more than 1,000 fix-
tures on display, it is the
only one not for "sale! . . . The
gorgeous piece hung in a
synagogue bombed out in
Prague during World War
II.
The fixture, estimated by
Harry to have been made in
the 1700s, was smashed and
brought over from Europe
by an antique dealer .. .
Harry had it restored and
has refused a $1,000 offer
for it . . . It hangs by itself in
majestic elegance as befit-
ting such a true work of art.
An oddity of the fixture is
the Stars of David that sur-
round it . . . All have eight
points which, it is noted in
architectural history, crop
up every so often instead of
the usual six . . . There has
never been an accounting
for this."
