Special Brit at Beth Shalom

The brit mila of a child of
an Israeli and a Russian
Jew will be marked Satur-
day evening at Cong. Beth
Shalom.
The child, David Rashty,
is the son of Reuben Rashty
of Israel and Irina Rashty, a
former Soviet Jewish citi-
zen.

HAPPY NEW YEAR

Rabbi David Nelson,
spiritual leader of the con-
gregation, recalled how the
ceremony came to be at
Beth Shalom.
A few years ago, the
child's grandfather pre-
sented the synagogue
with a Torah pointer as a
gift. Asked why the man
chose Beth Shalom,
Rabbi Nelson said that
his synagogue makes it a
practice of giving tickets
for High Holiday services
to newly arrived Soviet
Jewish immigrants, who
are found through the
Resettlement Service of
the Jewish Family Serv-
ice. Learning of this the
grandfather was directed
to Beth Shalom.
About 2 1/2-three years
ago, the man's daughter,
Irina, came to the Detroit
area. Last year, she married
Rashty. Beth Shalom was
the scene of the couple's au=
fruf and wedding.
The ceremony will take
place at 6 p.m. Cantor
Samuel Greenbaum, cantor
of Beth Shalom, will of-
ficiate.

Patients Attend
Services at Sinai
Via Videotape

In a joint congregational
effort, Rabbi David Nelson
of Cong. Beth Shalom and
Cantor Louis Klein of Cong.
Bnai Moshe will join forces
to conduct High Holiday
services for the patients at
Sinai Hospital.
According to Rabbi Nel-
son, he and Cantor Klein
met Thursday at the hospi-
tal where they videotaped
portions of the services, in-
cluding the blowing of the
shofar.
The videotape will be
shown to Jewish patients in
the hospital via Sinai's new
videotape facilities.
