Holiday Traditions Explained

By RABBI SAMUEL FOX

(Copyright 1979, JTA, Inc.)

The cantor wears a white
gown (kittel) when he of-
ficiates at the services on
Rosh Hashana. This prac-
tice applies to Yom Kippur
as well. It should be noted
that many religiously ob-
servant Jews wear white
gowns on both Rosh
Hashana and Yom Kippur.
Furthermore, the ark cover
and the alter cover are
white on those days.
There are at least three
reasons offered for this
practice. One reason is that
the white gown resembles
the shrouds with which the
dead are dressed for burial.
The idea is that on these
days of judgment a person
should be as serious as
possible in face of the de-
stiny which is being
planned for him.
Reminding one's self of
the fact of death as the even-
tual end of life is one thing
that can bring a person back
to moral behavior and con-
scious responsiblity. A sec-
ond reason is that the white
cloak indicates a victory of
being declared innocent at
the bar of Divine judgment.
The source of this idea
is traced back to the pro-
phet Isaiah who spoke of
Divine forgiveness as an
appearance of white
clothes (Isaiah 1:18). The
white, therefore, prom-
otes a sense of security
and confidence in the
Almighty's merciful for-
giveness.
A third reason connects
this practice with the an-
cient celebration at Yom
Kippur when the "daugh-
ters of Israel" would appear
on the street wearing white
clothes. This was done so
that they would all look
alike and would not embar-
rass the poor ones who could
not afford to dress them-
selves in assorted colors.

The white robe on Rosh
Hashana and Yom Kippur
would thus stress the equal-
ity of all the people indicat-
ipg that all are equal in the
sight of the Almighty
(Ta'anit 4:8)
The shofar is blown in the
late service (Musaf) rather
than in the earlier service
(Shaharit).
Technically, the tradi-
tion calls for the mitzva of
shofar to be observed as
early as possible in the
day. Apparently (see
Yerushalmi Rosh
Hashana 4:8), this was
changed because of an
historic incident.
It seems that at one time
the enemies of the Jewish
people thouiht that blowing
the shofar was a call to war
against them when it was
sounded early in the morn-
ing. When the change oc-
curred, advancing the

shofar blowing to later in
the service, they realized
that this was part of the
prayer service and took no
offense.

Kosher Foods
at Day Camps

BROOKLYN, N.Y. —
This summer about 11,000
children were served kosher
lunches and snacks at al-
most 60 day camps spon-
sored by the Associated
YM-YWHA of Greater New
York. It also was reported
that several non-Jewish
groups such as the YMCA
served kosher foods to cam-
pers as part of their feeding
programs. Empire Kosher
Poultry, Inc., was a major
supplier of the kosher prod-
ucts.
