Anna Kross Dies at Age 88
NEW YORK — Anna
Moscowitz Kross, whom
Collier's magazine dubbed
"Annie the poor man's
judge," died Aug. 27 at age
88.
Active in the. American
Jewish Congress and in
movements to defend Jews
against Nazi outbursts,
Judge Kross was the first
woman to hold the post of
New York City Commis-
sioner of Correction.
She also was the first
woman to be a city assistant
corporation counsel and a
magistrate in the city's gov-
ernment.
Judge Kross was an early
feminist and took the side of
the poor, runaway girls,
peddlers, errant husbands
and wives, prostitutes and
petty gamblers.
