Active in the. American Jewish Congress and in movements to defend Jews against Nazi outbursts, Judge Kross was the first woman to hold the post of New York City Commis- sioner of Correction. She also was the first woman to be a city assistant corporation counsel and a magistrate in the city's gov- ernment. Judge Kross was an early feminist and took the side of the poor, runaway girls, peddlers, errant husbands and wives, prostitutes and petty gamblers.
