Josephson's 'President Makers' Emphasizes Culture of Politics

When first published in
1940, "The President Mak-
ers" by Matthew Josephson
was a best seller. It retained
that status in the 1968 edi-
tion. Now, as a paperback
(G.P. Putnam's Sons) it re-
tains that status.

It covers the political
scene from 1896 to 1919,
and it has its effects on cur-
rent thinking.
Much that was problema-
tic in the 25-year period
under review by Josephson
becomes repetitive now,
especially in the bargaining
powers among politicians.

World Jewish Congress in
-London) reveals that the
10th conference of Islamic
foreign ministers, held in
May in Morocco, was
marked by division and by
significant new tensions be-
tween the African Islamic
states and the Arab oil
states.
The report shows that al-
though the move to suspend
Egypt's membership in the
Islamic Conference Organ-
ization succeeded, demands
for additional - and harsher
measures were not ac-
cepted. Moreover, six black
African states refused to
vote on the resolution and
Sudan and Oman voted.
