- THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday, July 20, 1979 9 Josephson's 'President Makers' Emphasizes Culture of Politics When first published in 1940, "The President Mak- ers" by Matthew Josephson was a best seller. It retained that status in the 1968 edi- tion. Now, as a paperback (G.P. Putnam's Sons) it re- tains that status. It covers the political scene from 1896 to 1919, and it has its effects on cur- rent thinking. Much that was problema- tic in the 25-year period under review by Josephson becomes repetitive now, especially in the bargaining powers among politicians. sonalities of the era under review by Josephson emerge again as reminders of the power struggles in those years. The role of big business is especially evident. Major among the per- sonalities in the cast of The eminent per- - characters in this book is m...1m Louis D. The report shows that al- though the move to suspend Egypt's membership in the Islamic Conference Organ- ization succeeded, demands for additional - and harsher measures were not ac- cepted. Moreover, six black African states refused to vote on the resolution and Sudan and Oman voted. against it. Resolutions condemning Israel and expressing sup- port for the Palestinians were numerous and ex- treme, but the conference People who specialize do things better than people who don't. B & H presents Travel, Inc. ISROEL adopted a "relatively mod- erate" opening address by King Hassan of Morocco as an official document. The king urged the Is- lamic states to agree -on a minimum plan for the Palestinians which would find support throughout the world, rather than make prom- ises which could not be fulfilled. Despite Egypt's suspen- sion, the conference avoided "active belligerence."
