UJA Campaign Ad Themes
Criticized by Bar-Ban Prof
RAMAT-GAN — A Bar-
Ilan University researcher
says United Jewish Appeal
advertisements act as a de-
terrent to immigration to
Israel and generally place
Israel in a negative light.
"Israel in UJA Adver-
tisements and its Implica-
tions for American Aliya
(Immigration)" by Harold I.
Greenberg, associate pro-
fessor of social work at Bar-
Ilan, is based on analysis of
UJA advertising in the U.S.
since 1948.
Prof. Greenberg says the
advertising overly em-
phasizes Israel's difficulties
on the principle that "the
dark side of Israel raises
more money than her suc-
cesses."

TEL AVIV (ZINS) — Ac-
cording to a survey by the
Dachaf Institute, Israelis
approve of the Israel-Egypt
peace pact by a 68-17 per-
cent majority.
Some 62 percent are
pleased with the perform-
ance of Prime Minister
Menahem Begin, 77 percent
approve of Defense Minister
Ezer Weizman and 65 per-
cent are pleased with
Foreign Minister Moshe
Dayan.
He criticizes the themes
which play on fears of Is-
rael's safety: war, ter-
rorism, sacrifice — and em-
phasizing partnership: Is-
raelis sacrifice in fighting
while American Jews sac-
rifice through the donations
of money. According to the
Bar-Ilan researcher this
line of thought serves to_ as-
suage the conscience of most

committed Zionists who fail
to live in Israel.
Lately, he notes, "The
UJA highlights unsolved
social problems including
crime, prostitution, slums,
school dropouts, which also
will not encourage many
potential immigrants to
move halfway around the
world to find the same social
difficulties as exist in the
United States." -
Prof. Greenberg feels that
the advertising line of fear
and sympathy, while possi-
bly helpful in fund-raising,
in the long run is
detrimental to the overall
image and well being of the
country.
Israeli success stories, of
people who, with help, have
made it is a positive ap-
proach which he feels
should be exploited.

Federation Asked to Hike
Aid to Hebrew Day Schools
Editor, The Jewish News:
The Detroit Association
of Phi Beta Kappa has pre-
sented certificates to 1,200
high school graduates this
year for having attained a -
3.80 average or better in col-
lege prepatory classes dur-
ing their 10th, 11th and
12th grades.
The Sally Allan Alexan-
der Beth Jacob High School
this year graduated 17 girls,
of whom seven were
awarded ,Phi Beta Kappa
certificates. This is not in
Jewish studies but in the
same secular college pre-
patory standards used by all
the 110 public, private and
parochial high schools in-
vited to participate in the
Phi -Beta Kappa honors pro-
gram in- the Metropolitan
Detroit area. The Sally
Allan- Alexander Beth
JaCob High School had the
highest percentage of PBK
honorees of any high school
in the program.
Isn't it time that the
Jewish Welfare Federation
Education Committee con-
sider changes in its educa-
tion policies and allocations
to all the Hebrew day
schools in the Detroit area?
- Can we ask the Educa-
tion Committee to accept
the fact that the parents
of the students and the
administrators of the
Hebrew day schools have
the same high standards
of secular studies to en-
able their children and
students to attend the col-
leges and universities of
their choice as do the
administrators of all pub-
lic, private and parochial
high schools?

community have ques-
tioned in the past the
standards of secular educa-
tion in our Hebrew day
schools. The facts given in
this letter should be the an-
swer.
But up to now there has
existed a tremendous dif-
ference. The public high
schools are supported by
taxes. The church parochial
schools are supported by the
churches and private
schools by, endowments and
high tuition rates. .
The Hebrew day
schools have precari-
ously survived by bur-
densome tuition charges,
in many cases made by
young parents under
great, economic strains,
general solicitation and
support from a limited
group of interested Jews
and with inadequate help
from the Jewish Welfare
Federation of Metropoli-
tan Detroit.
Today, it is absolutely
necessary that Hebrew day
schools, from elementary to
high school, be financed by
the entire Jewish commu-
nity through the Jewish
federation, to assure Jewish
survival.
