community aware of the is-
sues surrounding Soviet
Jewry and Israel by speak-
ing engagements and other
means.
Shepherd also said that a
concerted effort was made to
make the Council more vis-
ible in the community. This
was achieved through the
Council-sponsored radio
and _television programs,
media kits, contact with
communal leaders and
legislators.
He observed that there is
a well of support for the
American Jewish commu-
nity and Israel in the U.S.
and that support should be
nurtured.
Jewish Agencies
Aiding Seniors
The month of May has
been designated "older
Americans Month" by the
U.S. Department of Health,
Education and Welfare.
Almost all the Jewish
Welfare Federation
member agencies help the
aged in some way. The
Jewish Home for Aged and
Jewish Federation Apart-
ments provide housing.
Jewish Family Service pro-
vides volunteers who drive
senior citizens who don't
have cars or access to public
transportation, and in coop-
eration with the National
Council for Jewish Women,
runs a Meals on Wheels
program for the elderly.
Jewish Vocational
Service has a sheltered
workshop and a volun-
teer Senior Service
Corps. The Jewish Com-
munity Center has a wide
range of social activities
for senior citizens. And
the Fresh Air Society has
camping programs for
the elderly at the Butzel
Conference Center.
In addition, Federation
helps subsidize a kosher
nutrition program at the
Oak Park Community Cen-
ter.
Physicians from Sinai
Hospital cooperate with
several other agencies in
serving the elderly.
