been especially true in the
case of the Russian Jews
emerging from a 60-yeaf
spiritual drought. Along
with food, shelter and other
necessities of life the JDC
has been sponsoring a wide
range of cultural and reli-
gious programs. (The JDC is
a beneficiary of the Detroit
Allied Jewish Campaign -
Israel Emergency Fund.)
In March 1974, the JDC
opened a club in Rome for
Russian youth. The pro-
gram consisted mainly of
documentary films and lec-
tures on life in the U.S. and
Canada and lectures on
Jewish subjects. There was_
also a small library with
Russian books and maga-
zines.
In 1976, the Jewish
Agency, with the aid of a
JDC grant, opened the Tar-
but Club in Ostia, Italy,
which had become increas-
ingly a concentration point
for Russian families wait-
ing for visas for the U.S. The
club was an instant success
and soon outgrew its quar-
ters.
The following year, the
Jewish Agency, again
with a grant from the
JDC, opened the New
Tarbut Club in Ostia.
Along with enlarged
quarters there was an
expanded cultural pro-
giam for the Russians
and add _ itional staff was
hired.
The program concen-
trates mainly on Jewish
tradition and values with a
sharp focus on Israel, its
society and culture. It also
aims at preparing the
transmigrants for life in
American society, stressing
the role of the Jewish com-
munity.
The program includes
just about everything that
can be found in a Jewish
community center: Hebrew
and English classes; lec-
tures,-seminars and films on
Israel, the U.S., Canada and
other countries; concerts,
singing and folk dancing;
excursions to sites of Jewish
interest, arts and crafts,
meetings with Italian Jews,
exhibits, discussion gfoups,
book reviews, chess tour-
naments and a host of spon-
taneous activities.
Facilities include a baby
sitting service, playroom for
children, toy library, musi-
cal instruments and other
-services:
There are four such
clubs now in operation,
each with its own direc-
tor. In addition there are
five professional center
workers and a secretary,
all with a rich Jewish
background and the abil-
ity to speak Russian.
Each of the clubs conducts
religious services. Where
the quarters were not Erge
enough, additional space
was rented locally. There
were services for Rosh
Hashana, Yom Kippur,
Simhat Torah — each with
an average attendance of
about 400 people. There was
a sukka and special pro-
grams were organized for
the children.

Russian Jews near Rome, waiting to come to the
U.S., are shown in a sukka and in their small library
provided by the Jewish Agency through Joint Distri-
bution Committee funds.

matzot and wine, purchased
by the JDC from the Rome
Jewish community, were
distributed to all Russian
and non-Russian transmig-
rants in Rome. Each family
received a Haggada printed
in Hebrew and Russian and
JDC made ' available
taleisim, tefilin, Sedorim
and Humashim. During the

week before Passover there
are special lectures on the
history and significance of
the holiday.
It is not possible to fill a
vacuum 60 years in the
making with a four-month
program but the JDC has
begun the process of return.
The root of the righteous
yieldeth fruit.

The leader of the service takes up the matzah, sets it aside, and says:

THIS IS THE MATZAH OF HOPE

This matzah, which we set aside as a symbol of hope for the Jews of the Soviet Union, reminds -Us
of_the indestructible links that exist between us.

As we observe this festival of freedom, we recall that Soviet Jews are not free to leave without
harassment; to learn of their past; to pass on th eir religious traditions; to learn the language of
their fathers; to train teachers and rabbis of future generations.

We remember the scores w_ho2sought to .live as Jews and struggled to leave for Israel — the land
of our fathers — but now languish in Soviet labor camps. Their_ struggle against their oppressors
goes on. They will not be forgotten.

We will stand with them in their struggle until the light of freedom and redemption shines forth.
