third-year student at HUC
in Cincinnati, said she con-
sidered such responses
natural and that "it doesn't
bother me." But it does
bother Reconstructionist
candidate Ruth Sanberg,
who said "I'm not a 'woman
rabbi' or 'lady rabbi' but a
rabbi." She added " 'Rabbi'
doesn't mean 'man.' "
Miss Abramson said she
believed that the woman
rabbi will be accepted and
that all she has to do is do
her job. She declared that
"People are more likely to
accept you if you do some-
thing" without making "a
big deal out of it." She said
she did not expect to be ac-
cepted by Orthodox Jews
but "the people whom I
want to accept me, and
whom I need to be accepted
by, are not traditional
Jews."

But while Reform and
Reconstructionist sem-
inaries are welcom-
ing women as rabbinical
candidates, this does not
mean that their congre-
gations will provide them
with, pulpits. The Bnai
Brith editor reported that
when some congrega-
tions approach the rab-
binical schools for rab-
bis, they specify men
rabbis.

Students Are Taking Sides
on Ordination of Women

By REENA FRIEDMAN

(Copyright 1979, JTA, Inc.)
NEW YORK — Some 50

people, most of them stu-
dents in the various schools
of the Jewish Theological
Seminary of America in
New York, turned out for
the first meeting of a new
seminary-based organiza-
tion, GROW (Group for the
Rabbinical Ordination of
Women). The meeting fea-
tured addresses by two
vocal proponents of
women's ordination and
marked the beginning of
active student involvement
in the seminary debate over
women's ordination.
George Nudell, a student
at the Seminary and a
member of GROW's steer-
ing committee, announced
that the organization aims
to educate students regard-
ing the issues involved in
the Seminary debate, and to
serve as a political action
group as well. GROW is
planning a series of public
study sessions which will
explore the major halakhic,
ethical and social questions
associated with women's
ordination.

Eventually, the organiza-
tion's leaders hope to create
a forum within which they
might discuss these issues
with members of the Semi-
nary faculty. Finally, they
intend to encourage laymen
who favor women's ordina-
tion to contact the Seminary

"Senate" in order to make
their views known.
Acting upon recom-
mendations made by the
Commission for the Study of
the Ordination of Women as
Rabbis, the faculty mem-
bers comprising the Senate
are currently deliberating
the issue, and expect to ar-
rive at a final decision
within the next three
months.
While it seems clear
that the majority of Sem-
inary students do sup-
port women's ordination,
a significant number,
largely Rabbinical
School students, are op-
posed on various
halakhic, political and
sociological grounds.
The Commission report
had stated that 74 per-
cent of the Seminary's
Rabbinical School stu-
dent body approved the
ordination of women, ac-
cording to a recent sur-
vey conducted by the
student government.

However, on Feb. 12, a
letter which stated their
"opposition to women's or-
dination at the present
time" was signed by 23 rab-
binical students and sent to
Chancellor Gerson Cohen.
Those who circulated the
letter maintain that an
additional 11 students sup-
ported the letter, but were
hesitant about making
their positions known.
